ALT Did You Know? Giving students ungraded, pre-lesson practice quizzes can boost retention and transfer by up to 49 percent, when compared to jumping into a lesson without any warm-up activities. Pre-lesson quizzing–taken before the students learn the material—scaffolds the new information, sparks curiosity, and improves engagement and focus as kids “search for the correct answers” during the ongoing lessons, researchers suggest. ALT Did You Know? A single session of retrieval practice can generate memory improvements that persist for 9 months, and the positive effects of retrieval over multiple sessions can last for 8 years. In an authoritative study, researchers emphasized that retrieval practice is not the same as reviewing or rereading. Students must actively draw information from memory into “conscious awareness” to reap the full benefits. Source: Carpenter, Pan, & Butler, 2022

ALT Attention Middle School Science Teachers! As part of an NSF-funded project to investigate the validity of three-dimensional (3-D) assessment tasks, BSCS is interested in pilot testing 3-D tasks with students across the country. We are recruiting middle school science teachers willing to administer the assessment tasks to their students during the spring of 2024. - BSCS Science Learning
