In lieu of our usual Control Point (CP) Sundays edition this morning, we have an updated Transformative Rail Vision Map ready (google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid…), including MTL-TOR HFR, Ethan Allen to BUR, Vermonter to MTL & a couple glaring gaps: Big Sky Explorer to Sandpoint & KNX-CHT.
While this is no surprise to anyone following California HSR, the upcoming contract formality brings some new details on the order for the initial operating segment and full fleet build-out.

I know this is a trains account but I fly a lot for my job. And I don’t get how so many people could care less what’s happening out the window. Yesterday, I saw a rainbow over the Rincon Mountains leaving Tucson and looked down on my neighborhood landing at BTR. Best part of 🛫🛬
I have a modest proposal that will produce pure joy for a few million people & entertainment for millions more:
Combine the Bills offense & Vikings defense for 2 seasons. Twin Cities & Buffalo flip a coin for who gets first season home games.
Buffasota Viking Bills. 🏈
Both teams have lost 4 Super Bowls, and won zero. Both places get tons of snow, have light-rail systems and love hockey. Delta kills it on the MSP-BUF market for a couple years.
Hello from Union Pacific’s Nogales Subdivision on the south side of Tucson. As the name implies, the line connects Nogales, MEX with the former Southern Pacific main line (Lordsburg Subdivision) in Tucson. Ferromex has operating rights for cross-border traffic.🛤️
Nice to see this dispute over the purchase of this rail line in the Lackawanna Valley, connecting Pittston & Wilkes-Barre, has been resolved fairly quickly so Reading & Northern can acquire the trackage.🛤️
The sale of Luzerne County’s rail line to Reading and Northern Railroad can move forward after the railroad companies reached a settlement in a lawsuit over the deal. fox56.com/news/local/settlem…
Just a refresher that this account does not engage in any measure of rankings, cage matches, bashing, etc between cities, often geared for engagement farming. All cities can be improved and many have such a long way to go. And preferences are fine & real. But no places are bad.🌇

LA's newest Light Rail line starts construction.
The new 6.5 mile Metro light rail line will be located in the middle of Ventura Boulevard from Pacoima to Van Nuys. Construction is expected to be completed in 2031.

So, my read here is more capacity at Springfield Union Station for East-West Rail to Boston (and possibly to Albany) is unquestionably good. But traffic to the North to northwestern Mass, Vermont & Quebec still requires reverse moves (easier with Airos).

While this obligation of $550 million for the S Line project is positive, it is not any additional funding to the $1 billion grant announced by Sec. Pete in the waning days of the Biden Admin. It is only for the Raleigh-Wake Forest segment of the project.

After much delay, FRA is finally releasing some intercity passenger rail grants under the Corridor ID program of several years of inaction. Inclusion of this Hiawatha extension to Madison is not surprising but certainly needed…

Went into my wayback folders to dig out these photos from my 2003 visit to the Montreal Metro. It would be a little less than another decade until the Bombardier-Alstom MPM-10 ("Azur") fleet debuted on the system.
"In FY 2025, Windsor Locks Train Station served 35,576 riders. The new station features a relocated passenger rail and bus service from the south of the town’s downtown area to a central location near Main Street..."

Happy 60th anniversary to the Montreal Metro! The system is Canada’s most extensive heavy rail network. It moves about 290 million annual riders, or 800,000 people daily. I rode it in 2003, but haven’t been able to get back since.🚇
Oct 14, 1966: Montreal's new Metro begins running on three lines, part of a flurry of municipal infrastructure improvements leading up to Expo 67. Critics of Toronto's "bathroom tile" station architecture were quick to point out the Metro's 26 individually-designed stations. 1/3

ALT A train enters Saint-Laurent station on the Montreal Metro, 1966. A set of rubber tires on which the trains run in their concrete guideways is evident underneath the frontmost door. Various passengers are seen waiting for the train in the other direction on the near-side platform. STM Archives photo.

Could the long, drawn-out shunt/signal saga finally be reaching its end?

I was in a city last night for a concert. Can you identify this rail line near the arena?
Or if you know this lyric, you can look up the band and see where they were playing last night:
“It’s time I got back, and I don’t even know how I got off the track”🛤️
Like rehabilitated, “dynamic” completion dates are a made-up word, a politician’s word.
It’s mealy-mouthed nothingness. If there are inescapable delays, tell us why. We have billions invested with contracted completion dates.
Get busy finishing or get busy dying.
What bothers me the most is the rolling over to crappy outcomes and all-or-nothing scenarios. We need our public officials to put up a fight to show us the agreements matter and we’re paying #^*^%! attention. And find a way to get the portion that’s safe to operate running ASAP.
