My kingdom (still) for a full set of Spanish courses designed for teachers, ideally branching off into subject areas.

I do okay between Duolingo teaching me the language basics and a lot of checking other sources for the math side (and basically proofreading Google Translate) ... but I feel like I'm only going to get so far.

Classroom discourse is different from what a lot of resources out there expect me to want to know. I need more about asking questions and explaining things, especially with more abstract concepts on both counts.

For me, there may not be anything better than hearing 8th and 9th grade students softly singing along to the '80s/'90s playlist I play while they work on their math practice.

Uh, excuse me, but is Google Translate trying to tell me that mowing lawns is a male-exclusive activity or what? 🤨

My niece went to Homecoming with a former student of mine, but before he was my student, he was my neighbor I've known since he was about 5. Meanwhile I'm still processing that they're both old enough to drive.

A new school year = a fresh reminder of how adorable it is when teens send super-polite emails

Today was a really easy day teaching-wise, but because my classroom started at 84 degrees and never went below 77, I feel ridiculously drained. Maybe a nap when I get home...

Always nice to make a kid’s day, and today I did it for two… … by placing them in a more challenging math class. 🤓

(They chose to work independently all summer to master the content they’re “skipping.”)

I've been wearing a mask for two years while teaching teenagers. I don't think I can count how many different messages I can convey through eyebrow-position changes alone. 😛

Things I've learned at age 40+: How to ... - crochet (several afghans & amigurumi under my belt) - knit (very beginner, just the mechanics of the basics) - code for Desmos CL (solid intermediate-ish level?)

Plans for this summer: - get semi-decent at knitting - learn more general coding (playing w/ both Scratch & Python for now) - learn more about Data Science - (re)learn Abstract Algebra (the one college math course where even though I passed, I was like "What just happened??")

And also writing. Definitely, definitely writing. Trying to fire up various parts of my brain in a low-pressure way while free of the "Ack, what three lessons do I need to have ready for tomorrow?" grind. Anyone else into disproving the "old dogs/new tricks" adage?

It occurs to me that Rebels is very “Leverage x Star Wars” (to me, anyway) … just in case I needed further understanding of why it’s my favorite.

I always thought I’m a pretty good teacher who tries my best, but I’d never be the kind that gets chosen as Teacher of the Year. *goes to school’s closing social* Um, well … so much for that theory. 😳

*waits for @gavo277 to inevitably pipe up with “What took them so long??”* 😜

I don’t feel like I do anything particularly special, but I do keep trying to find ways to do better. And it’s nice to have that appreciated.

Always interesting to see which students take “sign yearbooks” literally—and *just* sign their name—vs. those who write messages (of varying lengths). (Yeah, it’s Yearbook Day)

Ok, looking through my yearbook now. One student: “I appreciate that you actually spell things correctly.” 😂 (Not for nothing I was the district spelling bee champ in 8th grade.)

Managed not to cry with my B3 class—they were my first group of accelerated 7th graders two years ago, and I taught most of them all 3 years of junior high. They kept me busy doing equation-races on the whiteboard. It was NOT my idea … they wanted to math until the very end.

I do hope I’ve prepared them well enough for whatever teachers they have next year. They haven’t had to adapt to a different math-teacher style in years. 😛
