March 11, 2011. A 24 year old American teacher in Japan refused to evacuate until her students were safe.
Every child she helped put on a school bus survived the tsunami. She did not.
Her name was Taylor Anderson.
Raised in Richmond, Virginia, Taylor moved to the coastal town of Ishinomaki in 2008 to teach English at elementary schools. Locals knew her by her big smile and the bicycle she rode everywhere.
When the 9.0 earthquake hit at 2:46 PM, Taylor stayed calm, comforted crying kids, and made sure her students reached their parents and school buses.
Every single one.
Only after the last child was safe did she get on her bicycle to ride home. Moments later, a 33 foot tsunami swept through the streets.
When Taylor was found days later, her grieving parents in Virginia, Andy and Jean, did something extraordinary. They used her memorial fund to build wooden reading corners and donate thousands of books to the exact schools in Ishinomaki where Taylor taught.
An American girl crossed the ocean to teach Japanese kids English, and gave her life making sure they made it home.
