After losing its 13th straight game to a Power 4 opponent, Maryland and coach Mike Locksley have mutually parted ways, according to sources. @PeteThamel first reported the news.
Locksley, who was hired in 2019, was in his eighth season as head coach. Overall, he was 38-49 overall as head coach and 39-54 counting six games as an interim coach in 2015. Locksley was just 16-47 in Big Ten play and had lost 20 of his last 22 conference contests.
Maryland owes Locksley more than $9 million when totaling the rest of the current season plus the remaining two contract years. Half of that payout is due within 60 days, and there is no financial offset if he takes another coaching job.
This year, Maryland has lost five straight games, including its first four in Big Ten play. But more troubling than the result was how badly the Terrapins were outplayed against conference competition. UCLA, Nebraska and Ohio State combined to outscore Maryland 147-42, a 49-14 average.
In the Terrapins’ last nine Big Ten defeats, eight of them came by double digits. Even worse, Maryland was outgained an average 457-241 in those three games. The Terrapins lost 37-30 at home to Rutgers on Saturday.
Miss ya, Bill. #ThrowItDownBigMan
