Brilliant author. Looking forward to his double biography of Sassoon and Owen. His "London", "Thames" and "Venice" are magnificent. I spent a whole winter adapting "Hawksmoor" into a tv series just for the hell of it - amazing book, which with Iain Sinclair & Alan Moore's "From Hell" introduced me to work, life and churches of Sir Nicholas Hawksmoor.
While London is going through one of its cyclical downturns at the moment (and some may say it will never recover) it is still, and will always be, one of the great cities of the human race
