First visit to Portishead today. Lovely place, beautiful views across the water, and naturally it got me thinking about the band who borrowed its name. So tonight, there’s only one album I could possibly put on. Dummy. 1994.

It’s an album full of tricks, yet none of it feels like trickery, it just becomes magic. Despite the countless records that followed in its wake, Dummy has never lost that sense of mystery. Funny how a day out can send you straight back to a record you’ve loved for years.

🌙 Mercury Rev – Deserter’s Songs (1998) Some albums sound better at night. Others sound as though they were made for it. Mercury Rev’s extraordinary Deserter’s Songs belongs firmly in the latter category.

Fragile vocals, sweeping orchestration, strange little melodies and an atmosphere somewhere between a fading dream and a forgotten film soundtrack.

From the beautiful ‘Holes’ through ‘Tonite It Shows’, ‘Opus 40’ and ‘Goddess on a Hiway’ to the epic ‘The Funny Bird’, it’s a record that demands to be experienced as a whole. Turn down the lights, put everything else aside and let it take you somewhere. Holes hits the playlist

🍂 Bruce Springsteen – Letter to You (2020) Some albums just belong to a particular season, and this one feels made for autumn, when the evenings draw in and reflection comes a little more naturally.

Springsteen, the E Street Band, and a record that looks back on a lifetime of friendships, memories and loss, yet somehow sounds so wonderfully alive.

And what an opening. ‘One Minute You’re Here’ is a beautifully understated reflection on absence, reminding us that sometimes the quietest songs leave the deepest impressions. One of my favourite later Springsteen albums, and one I return to with enormous affection.

HOUSE MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONG 🎶 Remember 2020? The world stopped, but the records kept coming. I’ve never bought as much vinyl as I did during lockdown. The anticipation of another delivery, the pleasure of opening a new album, and all those hours spent listening at home.

I’ve kept my annual favourite-album lists on Spotify since 2017, so rather than rewrite history, I’ve revisited my actual top ten from 2020. And in an unprecedented RadioSed move, I’m adding a track from ALL TEN albums in the image to the playlist!
