Horse racing was the most popular sport in the 19th century. Then boxing. Then baseball. Then football. But horse racing is the platonic ideal of a spectator sport. And all other sports are turning into it. - Heavy reliance on gambling, - owners are the personalities, - players are becoming boring and without personality like who just train all day like horses - genetics becoming more prominent -

One weird thing about "I Love Lucy" is that all the men are portrayed as big boxing fans, not football, not baseball, but boxing. Maybe boxing was a bigger deal in the 50s than it is now, but was it bigger than Willie Mays? I doubt it.
