If you want to know the truth about Elon Musk, British journalist Ian Hislop nails him.
I refuse to entertain anyone's delusions about Elon Musk that he cares about or is working to help anyone other than himself.

Cecilia Sala reunited with her loved ones after weeks in prison in Iran 💛
Countless people in Iran remain arbitrarily detained and at risk of execution or prolonged unjust imprisonment. All those arbitrarily detained in Iran's prisons must be immediately released.
Can I have one too?

Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has been arrested by the Islamic regime and is being held in solitary confinement.
“Cecilia Sala, 29, a war correspondent and reporter . . . was detained on 19 December, the ministry said, but her arrest was only made public on Friday.
She was in the country on a regular journalist visa and had published several reports on the shifting landscape in Iran after the fall of the Assad regime in Syria.”
For those who don’t know, the Islamic Republic is one of the most repressive states in the world for free speech, journalism, and press, and journalists who travel to Iran can only cover the situation in Iran in a specific light that is favorable to the regime (similar to North Korea).
Those who have reported/recorded differently after being granted permits have in the past been chased to the airports and had their tapes confiscated or erased.
That’s the best case scenario, otherwise, as with Cecilia Sala, journalism results in arrest, solitary confinement, and lengthy prison sentences that involve torture and maltreatment. A reminder that the two journalists who broke the story on the killing of Mahsa Jhina Amini—Niloufar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi—were sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.
Thank you in advance for speaking up against this criminal regime, the only known way to hold them accountable.

London please help. I’m praying for a miracle, I’ve just got into the office and noticed my mums locket (in all these photos) that I wear every day has fallen off my neck on my walk in. My mum died when I was seven and her jewellery is most of what I have of her. I’m devastated

Exactly 12 years ago today, a Taliban gunman pointed his gun at my head and shot me for daring to speak up for girls’ right to go to school.
I want to thank every person for your solidarity and support, from praying for my recovery to helping me in my work for girls’ access to education, both in my home country of Pakistan and around the world.
Most years, I spend October 9th like any other day, with gratitude for having lived another year. But today, I am in New York to address the American Society of International Law (ASIL), a prestigious group of legal experts who have chosen to honour @MalalaFund and its work alongside Afghan activists fighting to protect the right to education for girls in Afghanistan. These women worked tirelessly before the fall of Kabul in 2021, and fearlessly since, to keep girls learning under the most impossible circumstances. It is humbling to stand alongside them and gratifying to see them receive the recognition they deserve.
The Taliban continue to point literal and metaphoric weapons at girls and women in Afghanistan every day, from public beatings to ruthless edicts that ban them from learning, working and living freely. The brutality of the Taliban’s oppressive system against women is so extreme that Afghan activists and human rights defenders are calling it gender apartheid.
Right now, Afghan women and girls need more than words of sympathy. I call on governments and influential institutions to leverage their power, and through international law, hold the Taliban accountable. I especially call on Muslim leaders and institutions to play a leading role in challenging the Taliban’s misuse of religion and culture.
Just as people stood with me and my friends more than a decade ago, I hope people will stand in solidarity with Afghan girls and women now.

What’s astounding is that this speech could (and should) be given today, 84 years later. Shows how little we learn, but also that today’s challenges are far from new. Amazing. Chaplin was so extraordinarily gifted.

Energy prices are still high and the decision to axe Winter Fuel Payments from pensioners is dangerous.
Pensioners on modest incomes will have their winter heating budgets torn to shreds and it will condemn them to living in cold damp homes this winter.

News. The Chancellor's just announced Winter Fuel Payments will no longer be universal to all pensioners, now only pensioners on benefits will get it - in my view that's too narrow a group. Here's my formal statement to @RachelReevesMP ...
--------------
The targeting of Winter Fuel Payments is too narrow with the winter we have coming. Pensioners were already due to get less as this will be the first time since winter 2022 they haven’t got the up to £300 extra winter fuel cost of living top-up.
The Energy Price Cap is likely to rise 10% this October and stay high across the winter, leaving most energy bills nearly double those pre-crisis, at levels unaffordable for millions.
Many pensioners eke out the £100 to £300 Winter Fuel Payments to allow them to keep some heating on through the cold months. While there's an argument for ending its universality due to tight national finances, it's being squeezed to too narrow a group – just those on benefits and Pension Credit.
Yet again, those just above the thresholds will be hardest hit. This is often justified as there's a 'lack of household income data' to allow other targeting. However, there's a usable precedent from the emergency energy crisis measures announced in April 2022, which I'd urge the Government to look at.
Then, a payment was made to homes in council tax bands A to D – as an imperfect but workable proxy for lower household incomes. That'd allow an additional group of lower to middle-income pensioners to keep the payments and mitigate bill shocks. Councils' discretionary funds could also be funded as in April 2022, for the limited numbers who still need help but don't qualify.
Plus, with this announcement, the Government has a huge moral imperative to ensure the 800,000 people eligible for Pension Credit who don't get it, are informed, educated and helped through the process. It is planning an awareness-raising campaign, but it needs to ensure that reaches every corner – and if possible proactively and personally contact people.
Pension Credit is a crucial gateway benefit, giving access to a host of other entitlements, and now with the link to the Winter Fuel Payment, it makes it even more important to ensure fewer miss out."
