Something personal: My two-year-long sabbatical has come to an end. I'm so pleased to announce that I’ve rejoined @Moneyweb, the place where I started my journalism career 15 years ago ❤️. A homecoming of some sort. Let’s connect via email, on [email protected]
Today’s local election is special. It might be the last time the green ID book will be recognised as a valid document. Home Affairs will stop producing the ID book in March 2027 & the book won’t be valid in March 2028. Next election is set for 2029. We’ll be using smart IDs.
This is brilliant journalism!
“I don’t want to be just sitting there for two years vetoing everything.”
President Donald Trump picked up a call from @DashaBurns on POLITICO Elections Live and talked to us about the blue wave and how he’s willing to work with incoming congressional Democrats.

Yikes, this is a make-or-break election for Johannesburg, where I live and have invested (personally, especially in my hometown of Soweto). Please vote on 4 November.
IMPORTANT: The removal doesn't mean SA loses access to the US market. It means South African exports will no longer enter duty-free under Agoa & will instead face the US’s standard tariff regime, the normal duties applied to countries without a preferential trade arrangement.
It is regrettable that South African policies led to the termination of AGOA for South Africa. This was a predictable and preventable outcome resulting from the rejection by South Africa's government of real concerns raised by the U.S. Government. I remain hopeful that we can find a path forward to address our larger bilateral concerns, but the South African government must understand the gravity of the situation. We know that if America succeeds, so too will South Africa. This is the partnership I will continue to pursue as expeditiously as possible.

Illegal connections cause overloading of the network, and result in unplanned outages when transformers or mini-substations overheat or explode. This can harm your children and send them to hospital. You have the power to stop this.

A smart meter tracks your electricity usage in real time, giving you better control, accurate billing, and eliminating the need for manual readings.
When more households make the switch, Eskom can manage the network more efficiently, protecting infrastructure and supporting long-term plans to minimise load reduction.
To report electricity theft or vandalism, call the Eskom crime line at 0800 11 27 22 (toll-free), SMS 31090, or WhatsApp 081 333 3323.

This one cuts deep 💔💔💔. Estelle was a wonderful human being, so generous with her time and expertise—especially to young journalists. She was serious, but a hoot, and loved a good laugh. A huge loss for journalism and for all who loved her.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved colleague and friend Estelle Ellis on Wednesday night, 5 August 2026.
