Bought it a year ago, finally got to read it this week: “The Gales of November — The Untold Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” by John U. Bacon. A surpassing work of storytelling and reporting. Thought I had been reasonably schooled in the Great Lakes’ worst modern-era tragedy. This book was revelatory and gripping on every level in explaining a shipwreck and Lake Superior storm of ungodly proportion.

Modern Christianity has quietly redefined faith as a feeling. A warmth in your chest. A leap in the dark. Something you experience, not something you know.
Thomas Aquinas would reject that definition in a single sentence.
In the Summa Theologiae (II-II, q. 1-2), he argues that faith is an act of the intellect, not the emotions. His reasoning is precise: the object of faith is truth, and only the intellect can grasp truth. Emotions can be stirred by truth, but they cannot assent to it.
The act works like this: the will commands the intellect to assent to divine truth, and the intellect gives its yes. Faith involves the whole person, but its seat is the mind.
And here is the part modern Christians miss most. Aquinas says faith produces certainty that exceeds human science, because it rests on God who cannot deceive or be deceived. A blind leap cannot be certain. A feeling cannot be certain. Only assent grounded in divine authority can.
He even insists faith is not irrational. Miracles, fulfilled prophecies, and rational "preambles" show that revelation is credible before you commit to it. You do not check your mind at the door. You submit your mind to a God worth trusting.
So the question cuts deep: if your faith is a feeling, what happens when the feeling leaves?
Aquinas's answer: it was never faith to begin with.

Chandler Simpson just over slid second base because he had a sliding mitt on and couldn’t hold the bag with his fingers.
Sliding mitt continues to be the dumbest invention in the game.

Pat Murphy pointed out one of the most important aspects of the Christian Yelich play at 2B:
Yelich had a bigger lead than usual because he was not being held closely by the first baseman, with 2 out and a right-hander batting.
The extra step (and good secondary lead) made Yelich safe.
"The whole game was changed when Yeli was safe at second," Murphy said. "That's just a hustle play."
Little plays decide big games.

Robert Gasser has faced the minimum through six innings. A first-inning hit erased on a caught stealing. A sixth-inning walk erased on a double play. He has thrown only 74 pitches. He's carving the Rays and will give the Brewers' bullpen much-needed rest. Masterful performance.
