In 1967 Britain had more electric vehicles on its roads than every other country on earth put together, and they were all delivering milk. There were tens of thousands of them. The milk float: open sided, battery under the floor, top speed of about 15 miles an hour, and a whine you could pick out in your sleep. It was charged overnight at the depot and was back there by lunchtime. It carried glass bottles. Each one was collected from your step the next morning, washed and refilled. A bottle went round like that 20 or 30 times before it broke. The foil cap went for scrap. There was no other packaging. The milk had come from farms within a few miles, through a local dairy, and was on the step before 7. So here is what the country had. A zero-emission delivery fleet. Reusable containers with a return rate any modern scheme would kill for. No plastic. A supply chain you could cycle the length of. A man who noticed if an old lady's bottles were piling up, and knocked. It was dismantled in about 15 years, because a supermarket could sell milk a few pence cheaper in a plastic jug as a way of getting you through the door. Every piece of that system is now the subject of a government target for 2040. It was running in 1967, silently, in the dark, and nobody thought it was worth a mention.

Since I posted this Jaguar Land Rover, UK’s biggest carmaker, is to cut 4,000 jobs. China Shock 2.0 is not the only factor — soaring costs, especially energy, and Trump’s tariffs are also hitting the company. But Chinese competition is contributing to plunging sales volumes. JLR is not alone. Volkswagen is in the midst of massive job losses. But Britain might not even have a car industry in a decade — and if it doesn’t it will be down to a combination of politicians lumbering industry with net-zero fuelled energy costs and China Shock 2.0. When politicians from our Bus-Conductor-in-Chief down talk of reindustrialising Britain, ignore them. They’re pushing policies that do the opposite.

Today we mourn the loss of a true sporting icon, Sir Billy Boston, who has passed away surrounded by his family. Rugby League’s first knight, a Wigan legend, and "Everybody's Hero," his legacy on and off the field will endure for eternity. Rest in peace, Sir Billy. 🍒⚪️

The EU just extended vehicle recycling rules to motorcycles for the first time. Manufacturers now have to hit recycled-content targets and fund collection schemes. No motorcycle-specific cost figure yet, but someone pays for compliance. Usually the buyer. mag-uk.org/eus-new-recycling…

Good morning everyone, please read; The last few days here on X/Twitter have been bizarre to say the least. Most of you will have seen what has been going on, but now is the time to put an end to it, for everyone's sake. 🙏 What has made this particularly difficult is the fact that the other account involved runs a hedgehog rescue charity. Many of my followers also follow this account, and vice versa. We're all supposed to be on the same side! All my correspondences during this are easily visible by clicking my 'replies' tab, I've not deleted anything and I maintain I have done nothing wrong and have nothing to hide. I was going to address every hurtful thing I've been accused of, but I'm tired of defending myself, and just want all of this unpleasantness to stop. To that end, I won't be replying anymore to trolls, and I ask all my followers, from now on, please do the same, for my sake. 🙏 I'll be ignoring and blocking any negativity. Some have suggested that I mute instead, but that only means I can't see the replies, but all my followers would still be able to. It's upsetting that I've lost followers because of all this, but those that know me and have followed me for a while know the truth. Most of the people who have blocked me never followed me, don't know me, and just believed everything they've read from elsewhere.... and I get it.. If I were new to this drama, and I clicked on the profiles of the 2 main protagonists and saw a male bird photographer on one, and a female who runs a hedgehog rescue charity on the other, I'd probably side automatically with the hedgehog charity too! The really sad thing though, people shouldn't have to be choosing sides, this is the thing that has upset people that have followed both our accounts for years... I just want to get back to sharing my birds and other wildlife, and I'm sure the other account wants to get back to helping hedgehogs. A couple of days ago, I sent the same videos of my visiting hedgehogs to a lady who runs a hedgehog rescue near me in Somerset. Enclosed is her full reply. I love hedgehogs, the same as I do any other wildlife (except horseflies!) and will always do my best and always take advice from people more knowledgeable than I am... but there are ways and means of addressing people, especially when original assumptions are wrong. I'll be keeping an eye on the hedgehogs, supplying food and water as usual, and I have my local hedgehog expert close by if there are any further concerns, so please don't worry about them. 🦔 I hate all the stress and drama, my account is supposed to be an escape from all that, and I apologise to all my followers if any of this whole sorry saga upset you.🙏 I had to defend myself....but now that's done. Thank you so much to everyone who has stuck up for me these last few days, I really appreciate it. ❤️ From now on though, I'm asking you all to please stop... let the other account get back to helping hedgehogs, because hedgehogs need all the help they can get! 🙏 Hopefully, they will also ask the same of their followers, and we can all just move on peacefully! ❤️ Thank you for reading.. this will hopefully be my last post on the matter.

Marie Antoinette called & wants her social policy back.
The EU Commission in Brussels has shut off airco, but only for the lower floors, where the lower ranks work: “It’s like feudalism,” a Commission official working on a lower level of the Berlaymont, granted anonymity to speak freely, told POLITICO on Friday, referring to the fact that upper floors housing commissioners got to keep their AC on. A second official agreed it was a “disgrace.” politico.eu/article/eu-commi…

Every single person who still cringes at the memory of trying to bullshit their way through an interview or exam question: today, the slate is wiped clean. Set down your burden of shame. Nothing - nothing, I say - could touch this.
