Controversial take, and certainly a contrarian one, but I think the Bank of Canada rate hike was the right move.
I say that despite the terrible September employment report, which showed the economy losing 68,000 jobs after another 42,000 were lost in August, with unemployment rising to 6.5%. That clearly argues for caution. But beneath the headline, September’s weakness was disproportionately public-sector driven, while private-sector employment actually increased.
Meanwhile, credit conditions remain strong and money supply continues to expand. M2 by itself isn't a reason to raise rates, but when money and credit are expanding alongside resilient private-sector activity and persistent inflationary pressures, the combination becomes harder to ignore. The Bank is essentially choosing between two risks: overtightening into a weakening labour market or allowing relatively loose financial conditions to reignite inflation. I think the latter is now the bigger risk. If you disagree, look at the Canadian bank stocks.
BC Conservatives chose the normie to be leader and it worked. Could the fed Cons do the same?

I have been following the American polling carefully . I can disentangle the dross from the reliable. It's increasingly clear that Trump is going to suffer a major defeat. For me the question shifts from will he be decisively bounced to what sort of anti democratic chaos will ensue
I see comments like this where left voters think the NDP is too right wing. And I see moderate voters who think the NDP is too left wing and Cons too right wing. And I see right voters who say Cons are too left wing. Rather entertaining.
So your team didn't win and now it's somehow the end of the world?
Get some fresh air. We still have Canadians working for Canadians in this beautiful place.

Turns out appealing to a broad cross-section of voters with a likable leader and a campaign low on grievance but focused on the economy while rejecting Trump and MAGA-style culture war battles paid off for the BC Conservatives with one of biggest majorities in decades.

I miss the 2017 BC election. None of the parties’ candidates openly embraced homophobia, antisemitism, or antagonism to First Nations. The carbon tax was supported by the 3 main parties; the Greens (at the time) weren’t proposing to run a chain of grocery stores. #bcpoli
Would the best outcome be a minority with Greens and Cons working together? #bcpoli
Seems to me that in BC we have a choice between socially literate but economically illiterate OR economically literate but socially illiterate.
Why can’t we have both social literacy and economic literacy?

The BC Greens claim capital flight from their proposed retroactive wealth tax is a “mostly empty threat.”
Actual economic research suggests otherwise…
A new Stanford study examining California’s nearly identical 5% billionaire wealth tax found:
• Nearly 30% of the proposed tax base has already departed
• Expected revenue falls from $100B to approximately $30B
• Lost future income taxes could exceed the revenue collected.
• Estimated net fiscal impact is NEGATIVE $38.9 BILLION.
The researchers found a negative fiscal outcome in 85% of their simulations.
These are estimates, not final outcomes, but they expose a serious flaw in the BC Greens assumptions.
You cannot tax wealth that leaves your jurisdiction. And when wealth leaves, the consequences extend well beyond the tax itself.
Ideology doesn’t override economics.

Don’t forget that polls don’t win elections OR separation referendums.
TURNOUT DOES.
There aren’t enough separatists in Alberta for separatism to win if everyone votes, clearly. But EVERY ONE OF THEM WILL VOTE. If those who oppose separatism DON’T VOTE, the foreign agents win.
Please don’t assume anything, Alberta. Vote against the Russian & American-fuelled separation self-sabotage. Send a strong message to the rest of Canada that we’re in this together. Foreign actors want you to vote for your own Brexit or Trump…or to help them win by staying home.

If Vancouver’s election teaches us anything, it’s that voters reject extremes. The left needs to find balance too: progressive policies that are practical, affordable, and grounded in everyday concerns. Otherwise, we’ll keep swinging between extremes instead of making real progress.
This happens on all sides of the political spectrum. Politicians promise things they have no control of and blame other leaders for things they have no control of.
What’s the solution?
Here’s the newly elected COPE party yelling about the “cruel austerity of capitalism”
“We didn’t start this class war but we’re going to own it.”
Sir, you’re a city councillor.
Pave the roads, pick up the trash and maintain the community centers.
It’s a sad day when city officials turn this into a platform to spew woke ideologies instead of focusing on delivering core services for the community.
