🔬 1/3 A Lyme test that catches what standard tests miss? In a new study, LymeSeek detected 90%+ of early Lyme cases within two weeks, plus 21 of 30 cases that standard two-tier testing missed. It isn't available yet, but FDA clearance process has begun. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128…

‼️ NEWS: A 35-year study just shattered a huge Lyme myth. It’s not the deer! Researchers tracking a NY forest since 1991 found no link between deer numbers & nymphal ticks that infect us. Mice 🐁 were the driver. A big mouse year raised next year’s nymphs by ~40%! 🧵

Standard Lyme disease tests often miss infections in the first few weeks, which is when treatment works best. A new study in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology finds that LymeSeek, a single-tier test that measures antibodies against eight Borrelia antigens, caught over 90% of cases without loss of specificity, including early cases with and without a rash that standard two-tier testing missed. Showing that the test beats the current standard depended on well-characterized samples from the @HopkinsMedicine SLICE study, @LymeBiobank, and a @CDCgov research panel. Now LymeSeek seeks FDA clearance. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4283… @BayAreaLyme @Lymenews @LymeAlliance @ProjectLyme @danaparish @RealMalachowski

Doctors really need to stop being surprised when chronically ill patients know a lot about their own condition. We deal with it every day. We’re going to spend hours researching it and trying to figure out how to manage it.

🚨 The Kay Hagan Tick Reauthorization Act is now law. Signed yesterday, it funds @CDCgov regional tick centers, state health grants, and the @HHSGov tick strategy through 2030, plus Lyme vaccine trials in Maine. It’s named for Sen. Kay Hagan, who sadly died of Powassan virus.

🧵1/2 New research found that nearly 1 in 3 patients with antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi also had antibodies to another tick-borne pathogen. Co-infections were especially high in the Northeast, highlighting why clinicians may need to consider more than Lyme disease alone.

The actions of the passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001, prove that heroism "exists inside every single one of us," Heather “Lucky” Penney says. "Not a single passenger on 93 was a service member," she told PBS News' Nick Schifrin. "They were just ordinary, everyday Americans. And yet they were willing to fight the terrorists, to seize control of the cockpit and sacrifice their lives to protect us. It proves to me that heroism isn't something unique, that that exists inside every single one of us." Twenty-five years ago, Penney was on duty as a fighter pilot in the Washington, D.C., Air National Guard. She and her wingman, then-Lt. Col. Marc Sasseville, were authorized to use lethal force to take down Flight 93 before it reached the nation's capital by ramming their jets into the civilian airliner. "It would have been a suicide mission, and neither one of us hesitated," she said. "Everyone on the base, any individual who had ever raised their right hand, would have wanted to be in that two-ship to protect our nation. It was my job." But she never had to make the ultimate sacrifice as the passengers of Flight 93 stormed the cockpit, forcing the hijacked plane to crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Penney said she is "intensely grateful" for what the passengers were willing to do. She sat down with @nickschifrin on Tuesday to discuss the events of 9/11. Chronic illness steals things people never see. Careers. Friendships. Savings. Confidence. Time. An unappreciated tough part of chronic illness can be pretending to be okay because the world only understands the illness it can see it.
