Years ago during a funeral in St Patrick's Church on the Lower Glanmire Road, a priest was swinging the thurible with burning incense around the coffin. The silence of the solemn moment was broken by a young child seated down the back - ''FATHER, YOUR HANDBAG IS ON FIRE!!!''

October 1601 - Don Juan de Aquila landed at Kinsale with thousands of men to help us fight the English. Of course, it didn't work out well and Don Juan went into hiding at Portneys Lane in Cork City until he went back to Spain months later to be court martialed.

Terence MacSwiney, Lord Mayor of Cork, died on Hunger Strike in Brixton Prison on this day in 1920. In the Cork Public Museum you can see the doll given to his daughter following his death, a gift from the people of Catalonia.

The County Hall, Cork -very nearly called MacSwiney Hall! In 1967 the Cork Old IRA Benevolent Association petitioned councillors to name it after the martyred Lord Mayor but it never materialised!

Years ago, a high tide flooded the streets of Cork while Paddy was visiting his friend Finbarr on South Terrace. Finbarr looked the window and said to Paddy: "The floods are very bad, you'd better stay the night." "Oh thanks very much Finbarr, I'll pop home and fetch me pjamas."

The tune is cheerful, the chorus is nonsense, and the story is a woman taking a penknife to an infant, which did not stop Dublin children from chanting it on the street for decades. bit.ly/3nYeFer

Every year, Rory Gallagher came home to Cork to play Macroom, Ireland’s first open-air rock festival. In 1978, he made it legendary. He rolled up in a car, grabbed his battle-scarred ‘61 Strat, ran straight up the steps with no soundcheck, and tore into “Shin Kicker.” Pure rock and roll.

Years ago in Cork City Hall, a councillor who went on a junket to Venice was inspired by what he saw there: "I propose that we should put a gondola in The Lough." A second councillor agreed: "That's a great idea! And I propose that we get two, so we can breed them!"
