The “ish” in Healthy-ish might actually be the most important part.
Because healthy isn’t perfect.
The “ish” is the learning.
It’s questioning.
It’s paying attention.
It’s making better choices when we can.
It’s growing some of our food while still buying plenty of it.
It’s cooking from scratch most often, but not feeling guilty when we don’t.
It’s moving our bodies because they deserve to move, and resting them because they deserve that too.
It’s caring about what we eat without making food a source of guilt or shame.
It’s changing one thing at a time instead of trying to overhaul our entire lives overnight.
It’s understanding that what works for one person might not work for another.
It’s getting something wrong, learning something new and changing our minds.
It’s mindset.
Gratitude.
Curiosity.
Balance.
Accountability.
And slow, sustainable change.
It’s knowing there will always be another thing to learn, another skill to build, another habit we could improve.
And being completely okay with that.
We don’t want Healthy-ish to make anyone feel like they aren’t doing enough.
We want it to remind people how much they can do.
Grow one tomato.
Cook one more meal at home.
Learn where your food comes from.
Read one label.
Plant something for the pollinators.
Spend more time outside.
Ask more questions.
Change one habit.
Then maybe change another.
There is no finish line where you finally become “healthy.”
We’re just trying to live a little better, understand a little more, and take better care of ourselves and the little piece of the world around us.
That’s the “ish.”
And honestly, we just think there’s a whole lot of freedom in it. 💛
Gooooooood Friday morning!!
We're in for another mild but rainy autumn day! With our cistern needing a refill, we welcome every drop we can get!
A little extra reason to be grateful this morning!
Whatever you're up to, we hope you all have yourselves a fantastic day!
We're both feeling pretty tired and crawling into bed sounds awfully good right about now.
We're so grateful for another beautiful autumn day and a safe and cozy place to rest our heads.
We hope you all have a wonderful evening and a restful night's sleep.
Goodnight from us 💛
On our new commute home, we pass a local butcher shop that has been in the community for a very long time!
Picked up a couple beautiful pork chops today on the way by, seasoned them well and threw them on the BBQ!
Simple smashed potatoes loaded up with butter and steamed brussels sprouts on the side.
What's for dinner, friends!?
I just discovered Frost Aster flowers in our yard....in November!!!
Looking into this beautiful Aster, learned that it usually blooms through October, but can continue into November. Our late season bloomers are essential for our pollinators!
Asters have also been used traditionally, with roots brewed into teas for fevers and digestive troubles, and poultices used for wounds!
What a lovely new find!
It's only one little patch, so I'll leave it bee! 🐝
Did you know the brown crinkle cut packing paper from Humming Meadow packages is a valuable source of carbon for your compost?
We're saving ours to add to our browns collection!
There's something incredibly satisfying about saving seeds from something you've grown yourself.
From one tiny seed to a plant that feeds you, then gives you the seeds to begin all over again!
Such a beautiful cycle of life, coming full circle.
Respect the soil, protect the water, take only what you need and give back what you can.
Restoring balance begins with the choices we make every day.
Good Thursday morning!
We've got mild temperatures and a gentle rain this morning! The overnight rain brought down another lovely blanket of leaves across the country roads and it's shaping up to be an absolutely beautiful fall day!
We hope you all have a lovely Thursday!
We are getting ready to tuck ourselves in for the night!
It's been a good day, and we're feeling extra grateful tonight for the life we're making together.
We really hope you're all having a lovely evening and you get a restful night's sleep tonight!
Goodnight from us 💛
Make some room peppers! Chamomile is joining the party!
Our chamomile appears to have self seeded and sprouted with this mild weather!
And I can't help but give these little seedlings a chance!
Good Wednesday morning!!
It's going to be an absolutely gorgeous autumn day!
We are starting off with a mild 12°C (54°F) and it's only going to get warmer!
We hope you all have a wonderful day, whatever you're up to!!
We're ready to call it a night!
It's been a good day, and we're ending it with plenty to be thankful for. We hope you're all having a nice evening and have a good restorative sleep tonight!
Goodnight from us 💛
Baked pasta is whats for dinner!
Made with a homemade sauce from roasted homegrown slicin' tomatoes, local onions and garlic, and freshly grated Parmesan.
Tossed with fusilli pasta, baked honey garlic sausages, then topped with mozzarella, Havarti and more Parmesan and then naked until golden and bubbling!
What's for dinner, friends?!
The very last of our homegrown slicing tomatoes have all ripened at once!
What a wonderful way to finish the season by turning these beauties into a nice batch of sauce for tonight's dinner!
We have a very short growing season here in Ontario.
Forced to harvest so many of our tomatoes while they were still green when frost threatened to take our harvest!
But all you need is one blushing tomato to turn them all!!
Ripening tomatoes release ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that helps encourage the others to ripen too!
There are a few ways to do this indoors.
You can spread them out on a plate on shallow box under a towel, or use one of my favourite methods.... a brown paper bag! Folding the bag closed helps hold in some of that ethylene gas.
Ideally, you want no more than a couple of layers to prevent bruising. But I break my own rule!
I strategically fill my bags pretty full, keeping the ripest tomatoes on top and checking them almost daily!
I sort through every tomato, remove the ripe ones, check for soft spots, and rearrange the rest according to their weight and ripeness.
Just look at this progress!
This is after 2 and a half weeks.
The growing season may be over, but we're determined to make the most of every last tomato!
