Interesting how these plans are almost exclusively about the quality of teaching, failing to address actual ‘Mickey-Mouse degrees’ Also; judging a course purely on its employability (outside of how well it is taught)? This will just lead to a raid on the humanities- not good!
🚨🇬🇧 NEW: The UK Government has announced plans to withdraw funding from “poor quality degrees” [@FT]

This list of finalists to replace James Bond falls far short of the role- have we ran out of talented and undeniably attractive mid-30s actors? I am not a movie critic and could (and hopefully will) be wrong about this, but it feels more like the lineup of Downton Abbey- not 007

Why does an online form have a “daily capacity”? Even after noting it could take 72 hours to respond to them The NHS is a wonderful thing, but it so desperately needs deep administrative and internal reform. God forbid you be unwell beyond the 8AM race for appointments

Once again, Sir Humphrey Appleby has been proven correct- we need“to protect us against the French!" Jokes aside, why? If our enemies are close enough for conventional weapons/drones to matter, a nuclear exchange seems inevitable- do they mean the Arrow 2/3 system?
🚨 NEW: The Tories have promised to build a £10bn Israeli-style Iron Dome called the “Britannia Shield”

Reading works by John Hoskyns tonight, and one of his positions struck me Has Britain been in decline for so long that the issues and decline overall have become accepted as institutional, therefore beyond reform? A positive feedback loop from discontinuity in diagnosing issues

And so, another door closes for the youth of tomorrow. Entrusted with the vote at 16, but Heaven forbid they have their own forum to express issues that uniquely impact them and their peers

Everyone seems to be neglecting the one true measure related to this sudden European swing of Canada They are joining Eurovision for the first time in 2027
CANADA HAS BEEN INVITED TO BE AN ASSOCIATE MEMBER OF THE EU! "We want to bring the relationship with Canada to the highest level possible. We are opening the door for Canada to being the first associate member of the European Union"

Important to remember this number neglects to include students- most aged 16-21 (and some beyond) are actively engaged in studies and likely not employed as a result When students are removed, the % falls to around 15-16%~, certainly still bad but less bleak than 21%
21% economically inactive is an astonishing number.

Pius VIII’s plan to replace the Church of England is finally moving forward after 197 years
NEW: Andy Burnham denounces 'unacceptable' law that bars him, as a Catholic, from undertaking the PM's role in appointing Church of England bishops. Says the 'archaic' law will be changed. In the meantime, the role will be filled by Justice Sec Alex Norris questions-statements.parliam…

How has the ISE’s advice on car parking bay size remained the same since the 1970s- a minimum of 2.4m x 4.8m Nobody drives a Ford Cortina or Vauxhall Vivas anymore- this is too small for modern cars

There is some newer guidance from various leading bodies and institutions etc, but this is still largely within the realm of 2.6m x 5m I do think cars are getting too big, but planning regulations and advice should not be progressing too slowly by comparison to general trends

Why is there so much hate for the UN moving from the Mercator map, a distorted map for 16th century sea travel, to a more accurate depiction of the globe? Yes- there are bigger global issues, but the UN is not a single person in an office prioritising maps over famine or war

In the 1940s we had Bevin Boys, now we have Burnham Boys 10,000 'work experience roles' does not change the UK's massive job shortage. This is, at best, a temporary appeasement for a generation grasping for opportunities, not a long-term solution for the ~ 1 million NEETs.
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced Sainsbury's will offer 10,000 work placements from October to help tackle youth unemployment

Because countries with masses of highly educated yet unemployed youth tend to do well long-term… Having asked around my course, very few plan to remain in the UK to work or live. I fear an exodus of both youth and graduates is becoming inevitable Something must be done
🚨NEW: UK graduate vacancies have plunged by 45% in just one year, falling from 15,397 in July 2025 to just 8,383 in July 2026 - the lowest level on record At the same time, competition has risen, with now 2.14 jobseekers per vacancy, up from 1.93 a year earlier

Major (recent) droughts in 2018, 2022, 2025, and 2026, yet no new reservoirs since 1992, albeit with one in the works Our climate is rapidly changing and making us more vulnerable, so why is our attitude towards water usage and storage evolving so slowly?
As it starts to rain more in England government should not forget the water shortage. An increasing population needs more water and usage goes up when it is hot. Speed up plans for more reservoirs and for farm irrigation.

Having the drive to complete your A Levels is an achievement on its own. I am sure Jeremy Clarkson has much wiser words about how the results matter less than the effort you put in and the learned resilience As Churchill said, the world “is meant to be wooed and won by youth.”

I do not think enough young people realise that attending university was effectively free from the end of the Second World War until 1998, and now our student loans are being charged interest at RPI And yet I am certain our debts will somehow still be blamed on us

Sadness at the death of Ann Widdecombe now turning to anger and bewilderment at the news that she seems to have been murdered. We need the facts as fast as we can.
I am sad to hear about the loss of Ann Widdecombe, a heroic Brexiteer and a great speaker who could move Tory audiences to such ecstasy that she was a very hard act to follow.

Why does it feel like the UK is now in perpetual cycles of putting out new fires with little attention to future catastrophes or events on the horizon? As many massive, but predictable, issues are coming to light now, we keep digging ourselves deeper until a catastrophic failure
The Department for Education has confirmed that universities will receive £50.9 million less in teaching grants next academic year. Bridget Phillipson, the education minister has defended the reduction in light of tuition fee rises. [link in comments]

Using reserves and challenging admin/wages are short term solutions only As universities, such as Lincoln, Exeter, et al. are in this boat, growing problems with the culture, attraction, and finances in HE are to blame and need long-term solutions- not just headline bonuses
Exeter University wants to axe over 200 jobs and calls it “financial pressure”. Reserves up £188m. Six-figure salaries more than doubled. The money is the there just not for the people who teach. Academic vandalism at its finest. ucu.org.uk/article/14560/Exe…
