Abolish the Indian Act. We have nothing to lose but our chains. We will, of course, need new legislation that is an interface between the Federal government and First Nations. And this MUST be created alongside Chiefs and First Nation governments every step of the way. But it is time to move past the era of this outdated, racist, and patriarchal legislation. I support Prime Minister Carney’s work to position Canada as a global leader in human rights and democracy. The Indian Act is inconsistent with achieving that vision. Our laws at home should reflect the values we champion around the world. It’s time for a relationship with First Nations people that reflects who we are as Canadians today, recognizes nationhood, and lives up to the true nature of reconciliation.

It is crucial that representatives of First Nation nations sit at the highest tables, charting the course for their people and Canada.

Cree lawyer, former Member of Parliament, and residential school Survivor Chief Wilton Littlechild has dedicated his life to advancing First Nations rights at the national and international levels. As a Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, he helped investigate the history and legacy of residential schools and contributed to the development of the Commission's Final Report and its 94 Calls to Action. He also played an important role in advancing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples on the international stage. This Truth and Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge his lifelong commitment that has helped shape conversations on human rights, education, reconciliation, and First Nations self-determination. Thank you for your leadership and dedication to advancing truth, reconciliation and the well-being of First Nations communities. #TRWeek Photo credit: Fred Cattroll

Outgoing Governor General Mary Simon: "We know that Indigenous languages are not part of the Official Languages Act, but to me they are just as important as English and French ... every day there are languages across the country that are being lost. To me that's not something we should just ignore. I think we need to do more for Indigenous languages."
