In New Zealand, police have arrested a 56-year-old man in connection with a mass privacy breach of COVID-19 vaccination data. The man, believed to be a Te Whatu Ora staff member, was charged with accessing a computer system for dishonest purposes. This follows allegations that he spread misinformation using government data about COVID-19 vaccines. He claimed to have developed a database for the vaccine rollout and was interviewed, where he quoted from his work. The Ministry noted that the individual had no clinical background or expert vaccine knowledge. Margie Apa, chief executive of Te Whatu Ora, stated that there was no evidence vaccination was responsible for “excess mortality in New Zealand.” The data, which was published on an overseas site, appeared to have been anonymized, and so far, no personally identifiable information was found. An injunction was obtained to take down the information from the overseas website, and efforts are ongoing to locate it elsewhere. The individual had been working in the health system for several years and was authorized to access data as part of his work. He was locked out of the systems as soon as the unauthorized use was discovered. Apa emphasized that Te Whatu Ora takes data security very seriously and was conducting a thorough investigation. She assured the public that vaccination is safe and effective and that there was no evidence linking it to excess mortality in New Zealand The New Zealand government, appears alarmed by these findings and fearful of public panic, are attempting to suppress the information.
