About two years ago, I built my first fully AI-generated web game.
A slender man like horror game.
I still remember the feeling very clearly. It wasn’t just “AI can help make games.” It felt like the beginning of a completely different medium.
Since then, I’ve been obsessed with exploring that idea from every angle: AI-native games, MCPs for major engines, new 3D creation interfaces, drawing-to-asset systems, generative worlds, agents, simulation.
After a lot of experiments, one thing became obvious to me:
The biggest shift in gaming won’t be that AI makes games faster.
It will be that games stop being static software.
The technical barrier to creation is collapsing. Soon, almost anyone will be able to create a game.
What matters next is what those games become.
I believe the next generation of games will be living, persistent worlds, worlds that understand you, evolve with you, and are inhabited by both humans and intelligent agents.
Creation and play will merge.
You won’t spend hours building a world and then press “export.” You’ll shape it while you’re inside it. Your friends will be there. AI companions will be there. Characters will think, remember, react and change the experience in real time.
The game engine itself becomes alive.
That realization is what led me to build Arcade around a very different premise:
AI shouldn’t just generate the game.
It should live inside it with you.
Today, Arcade is starting to become the foundation for that vision.
Morph creates with you, enters the world with you, understands what’s happening around him, and can continue shaping the experience from inside the game.
But Morph is only the beginning.
We’re still incredibly early.
The last era of gaming was defined by better graphics, better engines and online multiplayer.
I believe the next one will be defined by intelligence.
And I can’t think of a more exciting time to be building in games.
Thinking of Adam and his family. It honestly felt surreal hearing the news…
He was such an inspiring person and had an incredible way of sharing his knowledge. I spent hours watching his content when I was just starting out, and learned so much from him.

🇺🇸 A tech entrepreneur and his family were among 9 killed on a jet that went down in Florida.
On board, reportedly, were the 44-year-old Austin entrepreneur, his wife, their 2 children, 2 family friends and their nanny.
Flying them were a 55-year-old captain and a 20-year-old co-pilot, who had earned her pilot’s license at 17, before she even finished high school.
They were heading from Austin, Texas to the Bahamas when the jet hit turbulence and ice started forming on it, and soon after, it nosedived near Palm Beach.
Prayers for the families of all 9 people lost on board. 🙏

The next gaming platform won’t be a collection of vibe coded static games.
It will be persistent, real-time worlds that evolve while you play, where humans and AI agents coexist, build and live together.
That’s what we’re building with Arcade.
Weekly Update #8 is live 👾
And this one is pretty important for where we’re taking Arcade.
We don’t believe the future of AI in gaming is simply:
prompt → generate a game by coding → play it.
We think it goes much further than that.
The vision for Arcade is a place where you, your friends and AI companions can create, inhabit and continuously evolve worlds together.
And everything happens in real time.
You never have to wait for your game to generate before you can keep creating. You build, play, iterate and change your world as it’s running.
For that to work, your Morph (AI companion) can’t just be a chatbot sitting next to the engine.
It needs to understand your world.
It needs to remember what you’re building, the decisions you made, the objects and systems that already exist, and grow with you across everything you create and play.
This week, we shipped important pieces of that vision.
Morph now remembers your game brief and key decisions across sessions, and has a much better understanding of what already exists inside your world.
At the same time, worlds themselves are becoming much more expressive.
You can now turn existing objects into gameplay entities instead of asking Morph to regenerate them, create deeper combat systems, apply better animations to players and NPCs, generate more immersive music and SFX, build PBR materials and richer VFX, and create multiplayer experiences where players can have different roles, avatars and HUDs.
Your Mold & Morph can now also keep their cosmetics across every Arcade world, and your art direction persists as you continue building.
Individually, these are features.
Together, they’re part of something much bigger:
Persistent worlds.
Persistent identity.
Persistent companions.
Real-time creation.
A gaming platform where creation and play start to become the same thing.
No loading screen between an idea and trying it.
No waiting for a generation to finish.
You create while you play, and play while you create.
Still very early, but this is the direction we’re building toward.
You, your companion and your friends, creating and playing anything.

GG to @Team__Spirit & @FUTesportsgg for this incredible final.
We leave the EWC with an overall 3rd place for @TeamVitality 🐝💛
What a run.
Seven features. Seven days.
And the curve is following. 2,000+ on Discord, 10k+ new users in a few days, acquisition is starting to look genuinely good.
Been heads down. Posting these every week from now on.
1/ Weekly Update #6 is live — and your worlds just came alive. 🌍
Physics, day/night cycles, and a much smarter Boulder.
Everything new 🧵
This take is popular.
It’s also completely wrong.
No one has shipped a real full-AI game yet.
What you’re seeing are demos: assets assembled, a few basic rules, a short loop that looks good in a 30-second clip. That’s not a game.
A game is systems that hold over time, pacing that works, and something players actually come back to.
Assembling assets has been easy since Unreal. Making something sticky is not.
Vibecoding is fun. It’s also 1% of the problem.
It’s like saying cameras made YouTube irrelevant.
Cool, you can film. Now how do you publish? How do you get distribution? How do you know what people actually want to play? How do you make a good game?
Where you’re right is that most AI engines are taking the wrong direction.
There’s no point building interfaces and systems that just look like a slightly better Cursor. The market is completely missing it, too focused on the technical barrier, which is already collapsing with current models.
The real value was never there.
That’s why we still need new workflows and new platforms, not another general-purpose engine, but something that helps people create games worth playing.
General Purpose Game Engines Are Dead -
so stop building a new one
If you haven't noticed yet, it's easier than ever to build complementary editors for your games with AI.
That's why you see most of us vibe game devs so obsessed with building them: Figure out the right format, a good level of abstraction that still has (some) reusability across games in a niche, try to integrate AI vertically into it
So you noticed that building an AI native unity is just 3 months of /looping with claude away? Guess what, we all noticed it a long time ago and no, we're not stupid and did not leave that part of the field open for you to grab it. It's a dead end, it's where most of us started over 1.5 years ago.
"Fine, i'll make it a platform instead, built on top of my engine": Great idea bro! Now you just expanded your problem space by 100x in a developing market with an uncertain future. You're developing an engine which is DoA and also want to play the hardest economical game by building a platform. Notable exceptions here are platforms that try to become novel game like experiences themselves - risky move, worth a shot.
But there is value in having a good pre-packaged engine that helps you ship games faster! Yes, indeed, but what if it doesn't look like another bloated UI where you have to watch a 15 minute Youtube Video to figure out there is a hidden plugin menu in the engine ui? What if that framework is now code-only and you build your own editing experience, tailored to your game?
Go, experiment, build a game, build the engine and use reliable libraries, build libraries for others!
But stop building the next unity, no one wants it
Excited to be back at Stanford tomorrow for the Stanford × Google DeepMind Hackathon.
@joinarcadeai is supporting the event, and I’ll be joining the judging panel alongside Jessy Tang.
Looking forward to meeting ambitious builders and seeing what they can ship in just a few hours.
Hackathons played a major role in Arcade’s journey, so it feels meaningful to now be on the other side of the table.
See you at Stanford 👋

Thanks for sharing Joey! 🙏
A great friend and an incredibly talented designer.
Remember when creating a game required years of coding, art and design?
Today, I typed an idea and had a playable world in minutes.
Testing out @joinarcadeai and it feels like a glimpse into the future of gaming.
The only thing holding us back now is our imagination.
