Horror Retrospective

Released on July 18, 1979, ZOMBIE brought Lucio Fulci's gruesome vision of the undead to international audiences and became one of the defining films of Italian horror. Directed by Lucio Fulci and starring Tisa Farrow, Ian McCulloch, Richard Johnson, and Al Cliver, the film follows a woman searching for her missing father on a remote Caribbean island, where she discovers a terrifying plague that is raising the dead. Renowned for its nightmarish atmosphere, graphic practical effects, and unrelenting sense of dread, ZOMBIE helped establish Fulci as one of horror's true masters. A Bit of Trivia: In many international markets, the film was released as ZOMBIE to capitalize on the success of DAWN OF THE DEAD, which had been released in Italy as ZOMBIE. Although the two films are not directly connected, the marketing helped turn Fulci's film into a worldwide cult phenomenon. It also features the legendary underwater battle between a zombie and a real shark, one of the most unforgettable scenes in horror history. Which ZOMBIE scene do you remember most: the underwater shark encounter, the eye-gouging sequence, the Conquistador zombie attack, or the final march of the undead across the Brooklyn Bridge?
