Introduction time! 🍃 I’m Charlie Trotman, researching Natural Regeneration of saltmarshes and carbon storage. My background is in #rewilding and #carbon, having done previous research projects at Knepp. I’m excited to continue breaching the gap between conservation and carbon

Greater structural heterogeneity in #selfsown, unmanaged vs. planted, managed forests in Denmark - nice summary of our #lidar based study @thePeerJ by @RewildingS 🌿🌳🍃 #forests #reforestation #rewilding
Today we're looking at passive rewilding in Northern Europe in a paper that uses lidar to investigate the structural diversity of forests 1/ #rewilding #rewildingscience

What happens to water when it’s allowed to find its own way, rather than squeezed into deep manmade ditches? A fascinating & informative video by Rob @DorsetWildlife on the rainy #WildWoodbury rewilding site in #dorset well worth a watch and RT youtu.be/JxrdQbs85Vw

1/ Today we cover the important ecological functions of granivores through Mills et al 2017. The study highlights the ecological function associated with re-establishing small mammal communities in rewilding efforts within arid ecosystems in Australia #rewilding #rewildingscience

1/ Are you interested in how to carry out a reintroduction based #rewilding project? Then this paper (& thread) is for you. Zamboni et al introduce the reintroductions of giant anteater, collared peccaries, tapirs and more to The Iberá Rewilding Program IRP (Argentina)

Today we look at distrubance dynamics by Peringer et al The paper finds: 🐄Grazing in the absence of disturbance promotes simply structured mosaics. 🌳Large-scale forest disturbance is the only way to disrupt this pattern and maintain a heterogeneous distribution of grassland.

1/ Today’s paper compares global efforts to conserve Megafauna. Finding that: • Major inequalities exist • North/Central America & 70% of countries in Africa were major or above-average performers ⬆️ • Asia (25%) & Europe (21%) were major underperformers ⬇️

1/9 Today’s paper, by Zeller et al, describes a comparative framework for African and European grasslands, using the former as a reference for the latter, by investigating similarities and differences in cultural and ecological histories

Today we're looking at variations in herbivore populations using fossil dung fungal spores Finding: - Spore abundance & local biomass of herbivores that can be used to callibrate fossil records - Mammal biomass density predicts the abundance of all dung fungal spores together 1/7

Can river restoration reduce flood risk? Modelling suggests •Artificial log jams can ↓ peak flows but highly variable •Forested floodplains in the mid/upper catchment generally ↓ peak flow •Riparian forest rest. at the sub-catchment scale can ↓ peak flow up to 19%. Best
