New 📦: {GLMMcosinor} extends cosinor modelling with GLMM-ness! Lots of flexibility for fitting models appropriate for rhythmic data with non-Gaussian responses and hierachical structures (i.e. repeated measures)

📢Just out - new #AusHSI research on predictive algorithms for clinical deterioration has shown that predicting when (rather than if) adverse events might occur can lead to more accurate and clinically useful prediction models and better patient outcomes.

Delighted to share our latest paper on clinical prediction models @aidybarnett @GSCollins @elborgo9 @RexParsons8
We looked at models registered on clinicaltrials.gov and publication outcomes
From ~1000 records < 1 in 3 were published within 10 years

Thanks to the whole team @nicolem_white, Dr Prasad Chunduri, and @OliverRawashde1, but particularly @OllieJayasinghe who worked on this project as a summer research student at UQ and picked up R development like an absolute pro (way faster than I did)!

We analysed publication outcomes for clinical prediction model studies registered on clinicaltrials.gov
Outcomes have improved over time but most planned studies are still unpublished

📊 Many models are created for #ClinicalPrediction every year, but not all of them will actually lead to better outcomes for patients. This gap between the models that are created and those that are useful can come at huge costs and a waste of research effort – and it was what a team at @QUT’s @AusHSI set out to address with their #R software package #predictNMB.
“predictNMB can be used to evaluate a real or hypothetical prediction model in health economic terms. By adjusting the inputs to the functions in predictNMB, you may find that whether models are useful may depend heavily on the treatment available, the costs associated with treatment, or the prevalence of the event being predicted,” said @RexParsons8, a PhD candidate at @QUTphsw, who’s part of the predictNMB team.
predictNMB has received great feedback from both academics and people working in industry. Earlier this year, the team was named by @StatSocAus the runner-up for the ARDC-sponsored Venables Award for New Developers of #OpenSource Software for #DataAnalytics for developing the tool.
“I think it was … improved a lot by going through review at @rOpenSci and making adjustments to abide by the community’s high standards,” said Rex of predictNMB’s success.

In this NEW PAPER in @BMCMedicine (with @nicolem_white @RexParsons8 @aidybarnett) we found an excess of published AUC values just above thresholds of 0.7 and 0.8 - suggesting questionable research practices at play to 'hack' the AUC
