I’ve spent several years investigating education in Wales. Following this week's disastrous PISA results, we've made an @itvnews special reflecting on how Wales got here. The choices that reshaped our schools, the concerns over what children learn, and the fear things could get even worse. youtube.com/watch?v=1FSIfPjX…

Absolutely floored by bus prices! My 2yo is obsessed with vehicles (diggers = the holy grail but a colourful bus will do) so we treated him and his baby brother to a bus ride from our village outside Swansea to the library, 2 miles away, to borrow yet another digger book. It's a journey we do regularly in 6 mins by car.

The cost of two adult returns? £11.80😱 I can give my car a full charge for less - as well as get an advanced train return to Cardiff! Thankfully, the 2yo loved it. I'm still recovering.

Since May I have promised to lead a government committed to working with others for the benefit of everyone we serve.   I'm pleased to confirm that we have now reached an agreement that will enable the passing of the Supplementary Budget.    Key commitments in the budget reflect what matters most to the people of Wales - investing to bring down waiting lists and increase NHS capacity, expanding free school meals to secondary pupils, rolling out the most generous childcare offer anywhere in the UK, and now an extra £60m towards Additional Learning Needs provision in this financial year.   The challenging financial outlook will not dim our ambition for Wales nor will it distract us from the priorities we were elected to pursue.

Scoop: I have heard from a source familiar with the RAF Fairford story that the US feared a drone a attack similar to Ukraine’s Operation Spiderweb last year which destroyed 10 Russian aircraft. They fear Iran might copy the tactics and that drones might even already be in UK, hence abrupt departure of B1s.

The response to this has been remarkable - thanks to everyone who reached out. I was particularly struck by several quite lengthy emails from former or current primary headteachers in Wales who were deeply frustrated with the "discovery" or "play-based" approach to early learning we mention in the film 🧵

This appears to still be a priority for the inspectorate. I've looked at the 50 most recent inspection reports by Estyn and 43% contained a formal recommendation for greater independence or pupil choice. Only 14% received formal recommendations for reading.
