This ABSOLUTE madman from the Netherlands launched an entire YouTube channel dedicated to sawdust separation, featuring increasingly powerful designs. This is the kind of tinkering excellence that builds national industrial programs around garage inventions.
We don’t do this kind of nonsense at Blackpowder. Obs a joke account, but policies should be lightweight and make sense. If you bump against nonsense like this, it’s a good sign to sense-check your policies.
Accounting has accidentally made it financially impossible to replace an $89 laptop battery.
An employee’s four-year-old laptop now lasts 18 minutes unplugged.
Battery replacement: $89.
Easy.
Except Finance policy says IT cannot approve a repair costing more than 25% of the asset’s current book value.
The laptop is fully depreciated.
Current book value: $0.
25% of $0: $0.
So according to policy, an $89 battery is an unacceptable investment in a worthless asset.
I asked Procurement what I’m supposed to do.
“Replace the device.”
New laptop: $1,684.
Approved immediately.
The CFO saw the invoice and asked why we spent $1,684 instead of replacing an $89 battery.
I sent him the policy.
He replied:
“That’s not what the policy means.”
I asked what number I should use instead of the book value listed by Finance.
No response.
The new laptop arrives Thursday.
The old laptop works perfectly except for the battery.
We’ll send it to e-waste.
Accounting has successfully protected us from wasting $89.
So after we do our daily reading lesson, I let my kids roll a die. On 1-5 they get candy and on a 6 they get a little toy.
As you can imagine it’s incredibly effective for getting them “hooked on phonics.”
Great move. I’ve been flying United almost exclusively for years now. Have always been delighted by the wifi.
Our fast, free inflight Wi-Fi from Starlink is game-changing.
Now it's time for you to make a change.
We’ll match your hard-earned status when you switch to United now: united.com/switchtobetterwif…

We designed and built our own print heads too, which takes away the logistical stressors of sourcing heads from Europe at 5x the cost. This is our first test of the new head.

@TechCrunch just featured Modal Motors.
A Chinese motor design built in a U.S. factory still depends on rare-earth magnets China controls. Moving the assembly line doesn't fix the supply chain. Changing the design does.
See us at #TCDisrupt, Oct 13-15.

We are fixing this problem at Deterrence inside the defense industrial base (and grateful for the Tesla alumni helping us, thanks @elonmusk ).
Human learning is too precious to let atrophy: we can preserve it and expand it, if we use machines correctly.

Here at the first NAIA forum conference in this beautiful Navy Yard warehouse. Feels great. It’s like Reindustrialize with a DC focus.

This week SAMS students used a 1918 trench warfare wargame using miniatures to refight the Battle of Champagne with the objective of learning how infiltration tactics and elastic defense might inform offense and defense respectively today. The overall focus was to explore maneuver warfare in a highly lethal battlefield.

I've been wanting to make some t-shirts for client gifts, so I asked @oprktr to design them. They came out so sick. I can't wait to give them out. Highly recommend working with him if you're in defense tech.
