In 1457 it was formally renamed The Bear Inn to honour Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, whose family livery badge was the ‘Bear and Ragged Staff’ The 15th-century inn sat at 123-124 High St. It closed in 1801. Today's Bear Inn on Alfred St was built in 1606 as an ostler's house.
The Bear Inn, Alfred Street, #Oxford 🍻 "The oldest pub in Oxford", situated just off the High Street. Popular with students, locals and tourists alike, The Bear is a beacon for anyone who enjoys a fantastic pint of real ale and good, home-cooked, traditional pub food.

Britain once threatened war with its oldest friend. 🇬🇧 A friendship sealed at Windsor in 1386. Still in force today. 🤝 In 1839 Britain told Portugal: stop shipping human beings. Or the Royal Navy will stop you. ⚓ Off East Africa, HMS Modeste chased a slave ship for nearly nine hours. 695 people stepped onto a jetty at Cape Town. Never sold. 🕊️ They teach you the ships that carried people. Not the ones that stopped them. Watch the full story. 🎥

My brother has sent me an update on Carlisle Castle & wall defences, as I made him Warden of the West March 1470 & Sheriff of Cumberland 1471. Lieutenant-General of the North 1480, granting him the power to raise armies across Cumberland, Westmorland, Northumberland, & Yorkshire.

Douglas Strachan lamb for #TraceryTuesday, in Westminster College chapel, Cambridge. Being tenderly picked up by the shepherd, while Mary's donkey exudes benevolence, and two oxen bow their heads with infinite gentleness. @churchartnature @rosie_rejoicing

Happy Birthday, Richard III Richard was not only the last Plantagenet King of England but the last English king to die in battle, and very bravely at that. Nothing like Laurence Olivier’s portrayal of him as a deformed and serpentine child-killer, Richard did not have a hunchback or a withered arm. He suffered from scoliosis, but it was a sideways curvature of the spine and would not have been noticeable unless he was naked. Foreign envoys and visitors are always more reliable sources than English chroniclers writing under the Tudors, who had no blood claim to the throne and usurped it. The Silesian aristocrat Nicolas von Poppelau traveled with Richard and his court, forming a highly favourable opinion of the king’s appearance, behaviour and popularity. I am not going to enter into a discussion setting out the arguments for and against Richard’s innocence or guilt when it came to his nephews, but I will say that there is no evidence against him that would stand up in a court of law. Moreover, during his one parliament as King, he introduced a series of laws benefitting the common people and curbing official corruption. These included the introduction of Bail, jury reform (which prevented the bribing of jurors), and the establishment of an early form of legal aid, allowing the poor to petition the king directly without paying court fees. Richard also outlawed "benevolences"—a form of forced, extra-parliamentary taxation previously used by monarchs to extract money without consent, and ruled that statutes and laws be recorded and published in English rather than Latin or French, making the legal system comprehensible to ordinary citizens. Richard also curbed corrupt practices in local piepowder courts, by requiring plaintiffs to take oaths, and penalizing dishonest officers. After he was hacked to pieces at Bosworth, the city of York lamented, “on this day was our good King Richard most piteously slain and murdered.”

The Æthelwulf Ring - one of the finest surviving pieces of 9th-century Anglo-Saxon goldwork 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Made during the lifetime of King Æthelwulf of Wessex, father of Alfred the Great, it is decorated in gold and niello and bears the inscription “Æthelwulf Rex” - Æthelwulf the King. Its central design shows two peacocks facing the Tree of Life, a Christian symbol of immortality. The ring was discovered at Laverstock in Wiltshire in the late 18th century and is now held by the British Museum. Whether Æthelwulf personally wore it is uncertain; the Museum suggests rings like this may instead have been royal gifts or symbols of office given to loyal followers. A remarkable survivor from the royal house of Wessex, made more than 1,100 years ago 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

one of the most devastating parts of seeing the bayeux tapestry irl was clocking that for 90% of it, the borders are these decorative animals, then the battle comes & they gawk in horror as the fighting spills over and the margin becomes this jumble of dismembered looted corpses
