🚨 For years the Telegraph was one of the loudest cheerleaders for hard Brexit and the glorious economic freedom supposedly waiting outside Europe. Now the Telegraph is owned by a German 🇩🇪 company. And that German owner is cutting up to 100 jobs as it restructures the paper into a “global, AI-powered” business. Some of its most hardline Brexit voices are also reported to be among those leaving. Perhaps there is a lesson here. Markets really are global. Capital really does cross borders. And shouting “sovereignty” does not stop decisions about British jobs being made somewhere else. Brexit promised control. The ownership structure tells a rather different story.

🇷🇸 Something hopeful from Serbia 👉 and a blow to Putin ✅ After nearly two years of student-led protests against corruption and creeping authoritarianism, Aleksandar Vučić has conceded defeat. A movement that began after the Novi Sad station disaster has just beaten a political machine that dominated Serbia for 12 years. That matters far beyond Serbia. Strongmen survive by convincing people resistance is pointless. Then one day people organise, vote and discover the strongman was not inevitable after all. The students still have an enormous job ahead of them. But today Serbia has reminded Europe of something important: Authoritarianism can look permanent right up until the moment it isn’t.
