A man identified as Dickson Yiaile Sitei was arrested on Saturday, October 24, 2026, along Lantana Road in Westlands, Nairobi, after spending KSh 6.7 million mistakenly sent to his bank account.
The incident happened on November 18, 2025, when a company was processing 74 electronic payments, including KSh 72,000 rent owed to Sitei for its shop in Suswa. Due to a payment error, an additional KSh 6,744,354 meant for another company was deposited into his account.
When the company tried to recover the money, Sitei is accused of spending it instead of returning it.
Detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigation Unit arrested him, and the DPP directed that he be charged with intentionally withholding money sent by mistake and money laundering.
He remains in police custody awaiting arraignment. DCI has warned Kenyans that money mistakenly sent to their accounts does not belong to them and must be returned.
