Within moments, ordinary citizen Jordan Salinas — a local gun owner legally carrying — got out of his vehicle, engaged the gunman with his handgun, and forced the attack to end. At least three people died and others were wounded, but the death toll would almost certainly have been higher without that immediate armed response. Police later confirmed the suspect was dead and the threat was over. This is not an isolated story. Across the country, armed private citizens repeatedly stop or limit attacks before police can arrive. When seconds count, the nearest first responder is often the law-abiding American who decided to carry. These incidents prove the core truth of the Second Amendment: the right to keep and bear arms is not theoretical. It is the practical ability of free citizens to defend themselves and others when government cannot be there in time. States that respect this right through constitutional (permitless) carry make it easier for responsible people to be prepared. President Trump should push for constitutional carry nationwide. That means federal recognition so a law-abiding citizen who can carry in one free state can carry in all 50 without a patchwork of permits, reciprocity fights, and “may-issue” roadblocks. Criminals ignore gun laws. Honest Americans should not be forced to navigate them while waiting for help that arrives after the shooting stops.
