They also spoke of needing a system that stands behind them and treats every school and every learner as equally deserving. This is a humbling reminder of why the Right to Read Campaign begins with teachers. Lasting change in reading will not come from policy alone.

It is lived every day in classrooms, by teachers who care deeply about the children in front of them. What has impressed us most is the dedication of teachers and their calls for reform. Again and again, they spoke of wanting to make sure that no child is left behind.

Over four Masterclasses, Foundation Phase teachers in Makhanda shared something invaluable: their honest reflections on what it takes to teach a child to read. As we read through their feedback, we are reminded that the reading crisis is not an abstract statistic. 🧵 #R2R

On 29 October, the @Lebone_Centre for Children's Literature and Literacy hosted the final Masterclass, on Texts. Teachers considered the availability, quality and use of reading materials, and what every classroom needs so that every child has access to quality, appropriate texts

On 27 October, the @Rhodes_Uni Education Department hosted the Masterclass on Teacher Training. Teachers reflected on how they were prepared to teach reading and engaged with student teachers who will soon enter the profession.
