🇨🇦 CANADIANS REMEMBERED
🕯️ MIKE BULLARD (1957–2024)
October 11, 2024 — Remembering a Canadian Late-Night Television Pioneer
Two years ago today, Canada lost comedian and television personality Mike Bullard, who passed away at the age of 67.
For millions of Canadians who stayed up late during the late 1990s and early 2000s, Open Mike with Mike Bullard was a familiar part of the television landscape.
Born in Etobicoke, Ontario, on June 12, 1957, Bullard took an unusual road to show business. Before finding success in comedy, he worked as a police officer and for Bell Canada. He eventually found his calling on the stand-up circuit, becoming a familiar performer at Yuk Yuk’s comedy clubs.
His big break came in 1997 with the launch of Open Mike with Mike Bullard on The Comedy Network. The program proved so popular that it expanded to the national CTV network in 1998.
Broadcast from Toronto’s historic Masonic Temple, the show featured celebrity interviews, musical performances, and Bullard’s trademark audience interactions. He was particularly known for turning ordinary audience members into the targets of his quick-witted, often merciless jokes!
At its peak, Open Mike accomplished something remarkable: it attracted more Canadian viewers than American late-night giants Jay Leno and David Letterman.
The program welcomed everyone from Hollywood celebrities and professional athletes to Canadian musicians and politicians, including Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.
Over six seasons, Open Mike earned two Gemini Awards and helped establish that a Canadian-produced late-night talk show could compete with the biggest American programs.
In 2003, Bullard moved to Global Television with The Mike Bullard Show, although the new program was cancelled after just 13 weeks.
He later returned to broadcasting on radio, hosting Beyond the Mic with Mike Bullard on Toronto’s Newstalk 1010 from 2010 to 2016.
His later years included personal and legal troubles, but also charitable work. In 2022, Bullard travelled to war-torn Ukraine to assist humanitarian organizations delivering much-needed supplies.
For those who remember Canadian television at the turn of the millennium, Mike Bullard represented a time when a homegrown comedian could command the late-night spotlight, interview international stars, and make Canadians laugh from a studio right here at home.
🇨🇦 Do you remember staying up to watch Open Mike with Mike Bullard? What did you think of his brand of comedy?

It's a national shame that this great Canadian was ever derided and cancelled.
It says a lot about how sanctimonious some Canadians became this past decade.

6 years ago, Don Cherry was fired for saying this.
But it is as true today as it was then. Even more today.
Wearing a poppy is NOT a political statement. It's about honoring our veterans.
Thank you for your service and your sacrifices have not been forgotten.
