We have to stop being scared of the bot and start building the conditions where the next generation knows that you can actually deal with what they are bringing you.
When they bring a messy, terrified version of themselves to a chatbot instead of to you, it is because they’ve realized their truth is a burden you aren’t equipped to carry. We’re teaching them they only matter when they are being convenient.

Some days I sit around and think, I don’t talk to anybody anymore. And I’m an emotion scientist. If it’s happening to me, I have to believe a lot of us are feeling it too.
That is part of why my friend and colleague Dan Cordaro and I made The Point of Connection™. Not to make conversation impressive. Just to give people a reason to sit across from each other, answer one honest question, and see where it takes them.

Love Viktor Frankl’s work :) The Meta-Moment technique I co-developed with @RobinSStern, and write about in Dealing with Feeling, is built for exactly this space between activation and response.
We all get activated. The question is whether we let the feeling drive the reaction, or pause long enough to choose a response that serves who we want to be. That space is a skill, and it can change everything.

You cannot pull adult SEL out of implementation and expect the rest to stay standing.
Students do not experience SEL as a framework on paper. They experience it by observing adults' tone, regulation, repair, relationships, and the consistency of those skills across the school day. That is why adult learning cannot be assumed. It has to be built into training, implementation, and the support schools provide over time.
Our new Education Week essay explores a three-domain framework for educator SEL: learn it, live it, teach it. When adults are supported across all three, SEL has a better chance of becoming something students experience everywhere, not just something they are taught once.

If emotions are contagious, leadership is never neutral. Left unnamed, emotions run the room anyway.
This is why emotionally intelligent leadership matters and why we bring leaders together at the YCEI Leadership Symposium this July.

Most of us never had a real class on what to do with our feelings. We just learned how to hold it together.
This January, I’m bringing back the Dealing With Feeling Book Club. Three free live sessions to read together and actually practice emotion regulation with real situations from your life.
If “no one ever taught me this” feels true for you, I’d love to have you there.
You can register on my website under Dealing with Feeling: f.mtr.cool/tqoaxwgoli

Gaslighting is most dangerous when you stop talking about it.
@RobinSStern describes that deeper level of gaslighting… when it becomes subconscious and you start to identify with the aggressor. Control and isolation feed each other. Shame does the rest. And when someone on the outside finally says, “It’s not you, it’s them,” it can be hard to believe them.
That confusion isn’t a weakness. It’s one of the effects of gaslighting.
If you’ve been wondering whether it’s “really that bad,” I hope this gives you language for what you’re feeling. The full conversation with Robin is now live on Dealing With Feeling. youtube.com/watch?v=JGlI68AQ…

No more “we should.”
This is “we will.”
Stream the RULER 2025 Implementation Conference with your staff, name three non-negotiables, and put them on the calendar across grades. Ideas don’t change schools—implementation does. Students should feel it period to period.

You may confuse it with flirting, but "negging" is a type of emotional manipulation that chips away at your self-esteem. Teens and adults alike can identify and counter its sinister effects. Here’s what it is and what to look for.

Many of us grow up believing our emotional responses are just… who we are. That how we react—whether we shut down, lash out, avoid, or overthink—is fixed.
Hardwired. Unchangeable.
But it’s not.
We can learn to understand our emotions—and shift the way we respond to them.
There are skills for that. Mindsets. Strategies.
They can be taught. And they can be learned.
Dealing With Feeling comes out this fall.

The research is clear: the cost of this is more burnout, more turnover.
Emotional intelligence isn’t a bonus. It predicts educator well-being.
It’s how we move from saying “Here for you” to making it felt — and giving school leaders a “here for you,” too.
Because schools don’t rise and fall on logistical fixes or policy documents.
They rise and fall on the emotional intelligence of their leaders.
And it all trickles down.

Netflix’s Adolescence reminds us that cruelty today doesn’t stay in hallways.
It follows kids home… hiding in group chats, half-visible messages, even emojis. And too often, adults dismiss it with, “kids will be kids,” missing the real pain.
In our new @educationweek piece, written with @RobinSStern and @DianaDivecha, we unpack how bullying mirrors our culture—and why roles flip from bully to bystander to victim faster than we want to admit.
Because if we aren’t teaching kids what to do with their pain—someone else will.
And they won’t always use it to heal.
