Thank you to Munira Mirza @civic_future and @michaelgove @luhc for their remarks at today’s @CommissionCE conference: ‘Tackling Extremism in our Communities’.
I wrote on the Shamima Begum case for @lawfareblog back in 2019. Whether or not you agree with the Supreme Court verdict - this is a hellishly difficult area for democracies to try and navigate. lawfareblog.com/limits-briti…

More Macron criticism. You can just imagine what the response would have been if he had gone down the route of “acknowledging the exclusively religious” motivations behind recent terror attacks, as recommended here. Not universal praise would be my guess. nytimes.com/2020/11/06/world…

That’s weird because I distinctly remember being told by the CT smart set that a military response to the declaration of the caliphate was “exactly what the jihadists wanted” and was “playing into their hands”.

Enjoyed this from @Andrew_Zammit article in this month’s @CTCWP. Success has a thousand fathers, failure is an orphan.

To jump in (uninvited) on this. I was quite struck by this paragraph in a recent UNSC report. It’s only a summary, of course, but even so over-simplified in a generally unhelpful way.
