Ukrainians resist because our country was invaded, because russian occupation means kidnapped children, executed civilians, torture chambers, mass graves, rape, and looting. Our soldiers defend their families, their culture, their civilians, and their future, not the president.

Intressant analys över Frankrike.
The ugly truth about France and some of the other European countries currently in turmoil - and which none of the politicians want to admit because it'd be political suicide - is that you can't solve the problem by going after immigrants (as the right asserts) or the rich (as the left asserts), but you could solve it by going after the old.
One extraordinary statistic for you: people over 60 in France, a quarter of the population, own 60% of France's wealth, non-financial and financial (ofce.fr/pdf/revue/2025/3-192…).
And here is another crazy statistic:
that same quarter of the population, those above 60, receive nearly two-thirds of all social spending by the French government (previssima.fr/actualite/prot…) - which is famously among the highest in the world (France's government spending is an insane 57.3% of GDP).
Last statistic: they make up about 40% of voters because they're a third of registered voters (insee.fr/fr/statistiques/266…), and they turn out far more than anyone else (franceinfo.fr/elections/sond…).
Put our 3 statistics together and there's almost a bit of an apartheid situation here: the old own most of the country's wealth, collect most of the social spending and have the political power to keep it that way.
Which makes them a de-facto rentier class, living off assets and transfers paid for by younger generations.
And, of course, at the risk of stating a truism, the future is built by the young. Yet France keeps effectively taking money away from them to give it to those whose working lives are already behind them - and need the money far less since they already own the country's wealth.
What about inheritance, I hear you ask? That's the funniest/saddest aspect: given that life expectancy has kept rising, the French now inherit a home at 54 on average. The most common case is someone in their 80s leaving it to heirs in their 50s, in effect the very old transferring wealth to the about-to-be old (insee.fr/fr/statistiques/fic…).
You can add this to our earlier apartheid statement: on top of all the rest, even when the old finally let go of their wealth, it stays within their own "camp".
That's my personal situation, incidentally: I'm 42, my father is 71 and he is starting to look at ways to pass things on to me and my siblings, when our professional lives are already well settled, so it'll arrive when it changes things the least, which is pretty much the French system in a nutshell.
Now, I get that there'd be some unfairness in going after them: they paid into the system their entire working lives, playing by the rules of a social contract that told them if they paid up they'd collect at the end. Changing the rules now means breaking that promise, which is admittedly unfair.
But there's no magic wealth tree in any society: you can only take it where it is. That's the way most major societal transformations end up happening. They're often triggered by a catastrophic event (the so-called "four horsemen": mass-mobilisation war, revolution, state collapse, plague) BUT what really drives change is a transfer: wealth gets pried from the privileged class who've been sitting on it and handed to those who'll build what comes next.
So, in theory and in an ideal world, you can do without the catastrophic event and directly proceed with the transfer...
The fact that in France, and elsewhere in Europe, it's the youth protesting is probably no coincidence - even though they don't frame it as a generational fight. And even though, cruel irony, the left politicians many of them march behind promise to bring the retirement age back to 60 (lcp.fr/actualites/legislativ…), which would make the situation even worse.
Let's say they understand intuitively that the system is stacked against them, even if they haven't yet figured out how. And politicians are obviously doing what politicians do, meaning pandering to the people who actually vote, while pointing the young towards easier - and politically convenient - scapegoats.
To be clear I'm not saying it's the only problem in France, VERY far from it. I'm also not saying that all old people in France live a lavish lifestyle at the expense of younger generations: there are also plenty of very poor retirees who, if anything, would deserve more.
What I am saying is that it's probably the biggest elephant in the room: everyone can see it, nobody dares mention it - no politician, from any side, wants to run on cutting grandma's pension - and it makes every other problem harder to fix.

He decides what Britain is allowed to be angry about. He books the fights, stages the exits, designs the clips, and banks the rage. The ring is his. The fighters bleed. And for thirty years, the country has been watching the wrong man.
His name is not even Piers Morgan. It is Piers Stefan O'Meara. He buried the O'Meara before he was twenty-five, traded a hyphenated stepfather's name for something cleaner on a masthead, and built an identity so complete that the original barely registers. That was the first trick. The man who demands authenticity from every guest who sits across from him began by erasing himself.
Rupert Murdoch made him editor of the News of the World at twenty-nine. Twenty-nine years old in 1994, handed a national newsroom, not because he had earned it but because Murdoch decided he was useful. The outsider died the day that phone call came. Everything since has been the performance of one.
What he did with that chair is the record. And the record is this.
Three weeks into his editorship, his paper identified the person making silent phone calls to Diana's confidant Oliver Hoare as the Princess of Wales. The source was a corrupt Metropolitan Police officer. Morgan was twenty-nine. He ran it. Diana's private distress became a front page, and his career launched on her humiliation. When Harry brought his case against News Group Newspapers thirty years later, Mr Justice Fancourt's 386-page judgment found that unlawful activity had been deliberately concealed across the group's titles. GBP140,600 in damages awarded to the Duke of Sussex in December 2023. News Group Newspapers settled in January 2025 with a full apology, admitting unlawful activity from 1996 to 2011. Morgan was at the heart of those years. He has never fully explained how he missed all of it.
In March 2001, Paul McCartney and Heather Mills were still together. Morgan obtained a voicemail from Mills's phone. Not just obtained it. Played it. In his Daily Mirror newsroom. To staff. In December 2011, sitting at the Leveson Inquiry under oath, he told the panel he had never listened to an illegally obtained voicemail. The record of what he did in 2001 was sitting in a filing cabinet somewhere while he said it. He knew that. The inquiry moved on.
In January 2000, Morgan's City Slickers column tipped Viglen shares. The day before the tip appeared in print, someone purchased GBP67,000 of Viglen stock. His colleagues James Hipwell and Anil Bhoyrul were convicted. Morgan was not. The financial regulator investigated. The CPS reviewed the file. He walked. He has never provided an explanation that satisfies anyone who has read the dates in sequence.
In 2004, he published photographs purporting to show British soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners. The photographs were fabricated. He was sacked. He maintained they were genuine until the day it became impossible to do so. He did not resign. He was removed.
In February 2014, CNN cancelled Piers Morgan Live. His ratings had fallen so badly that local affiliates were requesting to be released from the simulcast. He blamed America's relationship with guns. America blamed Morgan.
Three editorships. Three exits. Not one of them on his own terms. Not one of them clean.
After CNN he returned to Britain and reinvented the business model. He would not report. He would promote. Two people who loathe each other, a studio, a loaded question, and sit back while the clip spreads. The ring is always his. The fighters are always someone else's problem the morning after.
He made Tommy Robinson, a convicted thug and fraudster with a documented criminal record, a fixture on that sofa. He booked Cenk Uygur and watched Cenk combust live on air, then treated the clip as content for a week. When Cenk and Hasan Piker were then banned from entering the UK in June 2026, Morgan publicly attacked the ban. Read that again. The man who spent five years helping to dismantle Meghan Markle for choosing not to live in this country suddenly discovered a principle about the right of American commentators to enter it.
He booked Mehdi Hasan, Bassem Youssef, Glenn Greenwald, and Roger Waters and called it debate. He ran Middle East panels with three voices on one side and one on the other, week after week, and never once explained the arithmetic to his audience. It is not balance. It is booking. A booker curates who gets to speak. A journalist is accountable for what goes unchallenged. Morgan is a booker who calls himself a journalist, which means he gets the credit for every confrontation and none of the accountability for the platform he built around it.
In 2022, he released a promotional trailer for his new show featuring Donald Trump. In the trailer, Trump appeared to walk out. He did not walk out. The footage was deceptively edited. A court found the edit unlawful. The clip had already been viewed millions of times. Morgan moved on.
This is the machine. Manufactured confrontation, engineered virality, tactical outrage, and a clean exit every time accountability arrives at the door.
Now watch who he chose most carefully, because this is where the machine becomes something else entirely.
In June 2016, Piers Morgan met Meghan Markle for dirty martinis at the Scarsdale Tavern in Kensington. She was an actress, not yet a public figure, about to go on a first date with a man she had met online, who turned out to be a prince. Morgan has said the evening went well. What is documented is that she stopped returning his messages within weeks. What followed was a five-year public campaign, dressed as journalism, presented as public interest, that climaxed with Morgan walking off Good Morning Britain in March 2021 after fifty thousand Ofcom complaints in a single morning. He did not leave because he was wrong. He left because the audience had worked out that the woman under investigation was being investigated by the man she had once not texted back.
He named Charles and Kate as the royal racists in November 2023. Not because he had evidence. Because naming them was the biggest available move that week. And the biggest available move is always the Morgan move.
Now read what he did with Israel and Iran, because this is the part that should alarm everyone.
In 2023, Morgan was the confrontational voice. He pushed back on pro-Palestinian guests. He cited the forty beheaded babies claim before the facts were fully established and pushed it hard. He was the man who asked the difficult question. Or he presented himself that way.
By July 2026, John Mearsheimer was sitting across from him and explaining that America cannot win and that Iran has prevailed. Morgan listened. The Qatar Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, appeared on the show and called Benjamin Netanyahu a war criminal. Morgan did not press him with anything close to the energy he directed at guests in 2023. He called Trump's threats against Iran madness. He used the phrase brazen pre-admission of genocide about American foreign policy. In three years, Morgan had moved from Israel's interrogator to Iran's most comfortable English-language platform. He did not explain the move. He never explains the moves. He just makes them, and waits for the audience to follow.
The man at the centre of this pivot is Professor Mohammad Marandi. Seyed Mohammad Marandi, born in Richmond, Virginia in 1966. His father Alireza Marandi served as Ayatollah Khamenei's personal physician and completed two terms as Iran's Health Minister. Marandi volunteered in the Iran-Iraq war. He served in the IRGC. In 2019, he was photographed in IRGC uniform and posted the photograph himself, publicly, without apology. He is a University of Tehran professor, a named adviser to Iran's nuclear negotiating team under both Rouhani and Raisi, and Iran International has described him as Iran's chief propagandist in English. During the 2019 tanker standoff, he disclosed details of an IRGC seizure before Iranian official channels had confirmed it.
Morgan has called Marandi a government stooge. A propagandist. On air. To his face. And then booked him again. And again after that. Morgan presents the confrontation as rigorous journalism. Here is what it actually achieves: Marandi goes home with a larger international platform, martyr optics for the Iranian domestic audience, and documentary evidence that even hostile Western broadcasters cannot dismiss him. Morgan does not expose Marandi. Morgan launders him. Every booking is the service. Every clip of Morgan being tough is the product Marandi takes home to Tehran.
Now look at who owns the building.
Wake Up Productions Limited, Companies House number 13490132, declared GBP17.1 million in turnover in 2024. Cumulative revenue since launch exceeds GBP50 million. One employee on the books. Morgan holds 94 percent of the equity.
On 9 July 2026, four new directors arrived simultaneously on the Companies House filing. Joseph Ravitch, co-founder of the Raine Group, built by two former Goldman Sachs co-heads of media banking, whose client list includes the Chelsea Football Club takeover, Manchester United, Endeavor, the UFC, and WWE. Gordon Rubenstein. Marc-Andre Zagar, representing Antenna Group, the Kyriakou family media empire, a four-generation Greek shipping dynasty with a World Economic Forum seat and deep Gulf-region connections. And Rashida Jones, former president of MSNBC, CEO of a venture called Uncensored from March 2026.
Also in that boardroom: Elisabeth Murdoch. Rupert Murdoch's daughter. The patriarch who installed Morgan as a national editor at twenty-nine has a daughter on the board of the company Morgan built after Murdoch's own titles were found to have engaged in unlawful activity on Morgan's watch. The family retained a News UK revenue share arrangement in the deal. The Reuben Brothers, David and Simon, Britain's second-richest family in the Sunday Times 2026 list at a combined GBP27.9 billion, with stakes in Newcastle United and Arena Racing Company, are shareholders. Karl Brophy, Morgan's former Mirror colleague, sold his consultancy Red Flag Consulting to Ankura in February 2025 for EUR45 million, taking EUR33 million personally, and holds a seven-figure stake in Wake Up. The company raised USD27 million at a USD145 million valuation.
Goldman alumni. A Murdoch. A Greek shipping dynasty with Gulf connections. Britain's second-richest family. A former MSNBC president. A Mirror veteran worth EUR33 million.
This is what Morgan calls independent journalism.
He is not the man at the edge of power, shouting in. He is the product power decided to back. The investment thesis is clean: Morgan's audience believes he is outside the establishment. That belief is the asset. The boardroom is the establishment. The audience is the return on it.
When TalkTV finally pulled his linear television slot, the audience on that channel had collapsed to nine thousand viewers. Nine thousand. He moved to YouTube, declared it a revolution in independent media, and his new board of Goldman alumni and a Murdoch waved him off from the boardroom they all walked into on the same afternoon in July 2026.
He was never the outsider's champion.
He was always the insider who needed you to believe he wasn't.
THE PROMOTER DOES NOT BLEED. THE FIGHTER DOES. FOR THIRTY YEARS MORGAN HAS BUILT THE RING, BOOKED THE CARDS, BANKED THE RECEIPTS, AND NEVER ONCE STEPPED INTO IT HIMSELF. EVERY CAREER HE HAS ENDED. EVERY LIFE HE HAS DAMAGED. EVERY PIVOT HE HAS MADE WITHOUT EXPLANATION. EVERY PLATFORM HE HAS HANDED TO A MAN IN AN IRGC UNIFORM. EVERY VOICEMAIL HE HAS DENIED UNDER OATH. EVERY PHOTOGRAPH HE HAS FABRICATED. EVERY DIRTY MARTINI HE HAS WEAPONISED. THE RING IS STILL HIS. THE BLOOD IS ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSE'S. THAT IS THE WHOLE CAREER. THAT IS THE WHOLE MAN.

I'm seeing quite a bit of comment about this, so I want to make a couple of points.
I'm not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created. The idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should hold these days.
Emma Watson and her co-stars have every right to embrace gender identity ideology. Such beliefs are legally protected, and I wouldn't want to see any of them threatened with loss of work, or violence, or death, because of them.
However, Emma and Dan in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right - nay, obligation - to critique me and my views in public. Years after they finished acting in Potter, they continue to assume the role of de facto spokespeople for the world I created.
When you've known people since they were ten years old it's hard to shake a certain protectiveness. Until quite recently, I hadn't managed to throw off the memory of children who needed to be gently coaxed through their dialogue in a big scary film studio. For the past few years, I've repeatedly declined invitations from journalists to comment on Emma specifically, most notably on the Witch Trials of JK Rowling. Ironically, I told the producers that I didn't want her to be hounded as the result of anything I said.
The television presenter in the attached clip highlights Emma's 'all witches' speech, and in truth, that was a turning point for me, but it had a postscript that hurt far more than the speech itself. Emma asked someone to pass on a handwritten note from her to me, which contained the single sentence 'I'm so sorry for what you're going through' (she has my phone number). This was back when the death, rape and torture threats against me were at their peak, at a time when my personal security measures had had to be tightened considerably and I was constantly worried for my family's safety. Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames, yet thought a one line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness.
Like other people who've never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she's ignorant of how ignorant she is. She'll never need a homeless shelter. She's never going to be placed on a mixed sex public hospital ward. I'd be astounded if she's been in a high street changing room since childhood. Her 'public bathroom' is single occupancy and comes with a security man standing guard outside the door. Has she had to strip off in a newly mixed-sex changing room at a council-run swimming pool? Is she ever likely to need a state-run rape crisis centre that refuses to guarantee an all-female service? To find herself sharing a prison cell with a male rapist who's identified into the women's prison?
I wasn't a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women's rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges.
The greatest irony here is that, had Emma not decided in her most recent interview to declare that she loves and treasures me - a change of tack I suspect she's adopted because she's noticed full-throated condemnation of me is no longer quite as fashionable as it was - I might never have been this honest.
Adults can't expect to cosy up to an activist movement that regularly calls for a friend's assassination, then assert their right to the former friend's love, as though the friend was in fact their mother. Emma is rightly free to disagree with me and indeed to discuss her feelings about me in public - but I have the same right, and I've finally decided to exercise it.
“I think she’s going to find that you can’t sit on the fence... The real win is when ordinary people can say these things.”

The point of no return by Richard von Mises is worth reading:
"A state becomes almost unreformable when the majority of the population is financially or structurally dependent on the state (state employees, civil servants, recipients of subsidies, grants, or transfer payments, etc.). As soon as those who net benefit from or are supported by the state outnumber those who do not, the system blocks reforms, since the majority votes out of self-interest for the preservation or expansion of state services."
Does this sound familiar? Some European countries, France, Belgium, Finland are already way beyond that point, closely followed by Germany, Spain, Austria and Italy. It works for a while, as long as markets buy more sovereign debt at reasonable interest rates. The party ends when they stop though. For France, they stopped this month, Belgium will be next.
The longer the socialist illusion persists, the more painful the inevitable cuts and adjustments will be. It’s pure arithmetic. Good luck Europe, good luck Euro. Buckle up, it won’t be pretty.
