I see some folks online celebrating more devastating job losses in local news today
But what about when nobody - and I truly mean nobody - is left to cover your town, your schools, your local politics and your teams?
Will you regret the celebration?
The clock hasn't hit 0:00, nor have replay officials been summoned. But @toledonews is not just my employer, it's my hometown paper, one that I've read since, well, I learned to read. The potential of it closing if a buyer isn't found is a gut punch.

Feels to me like Big Ten made a behind the scenes agreement to add more games against the MAC and Western Michigan if the conference and the school didn’t complain too loudly about getting cheated out of a win.
This.
Couple thoughts…
1. Multiple leagues are allowing these reviews (audio and video)to be aired live after ACC broke the seal last year. Much of this dialogue goes away if no discrepancy between TV interpretation and what replay refs actually decided. Shows power of that access.
2. Basketball has already solved this problem. Add tenths of a second to clock in last minute and have a backboard light as frame of reference to true zero.
3. Why is that reference light so powerful? Any clock as a separate source in 2-box (like B10 released) is dependent on an accurate synchronization of those 2 sources. People rightfully asking, how do I know that clock camera is in sync as WM player is touching the ball? Nothing obvious in this video to tether those 2 sources together. We just have to take their word for it. I have produced plenty of shows where syncing one camera or another was troubleshot throughout game. Doesn’t mean it happened here, but it is possible.
Wide shot with a light to show true zero in frame of play? Much simpler.
4. As for what was shown on TV…Any video source (clock in this case) layered on top of another via digital video effect (DVE) has potential to be delayed by fractions of a second. It takes time, all be it very small, for video sources to move around in a production router where they are mixed together by the video switcher. There are plenty of instances where a basketball final second shot shows time on the DVE clock (what TV showed in lower corner) while light and physical clock in frame of camera shot have already hit zero. It may only be a difference of a frame of video (usually 1/30th of a second) but plenty of sports moments prove to be that close. The data feed that powers the virtual “bug” with clock and score can have similar lag. Thus the power of the light.
If football puts a light on the goalposts and/or some other place at field level, nearly all the ambiguity of this instance goes away. Will be interesting to see if this lightning strike moment brings any change or just gets swept away in the flow of the season as such tech would take investment for far fewer close moments than in hoops.

We reporters (led by @LarryLage) have requested a pool report from referees to explain what happened on the first Hail Mary that led to U-M getting final play.
Unclear if that request will be granted .

I just want to make it very clear…local journalism matters…
And it needs to be protected. Not thrown away.
Today's good read: Just how did @BG_Football marching band get so big ... and so good?

.@BallStateWVB reverse sweeps @NDvolleyball and @BGSUVolleyball beats @ohiostatewvb in 4. Not a bad first night, @macsports. Just hope the committee remembers in November...
Jeff is good people. Only crossed paths for a couple of months at @toledosports, but he's solid. Many a publication would benefit by hiring him.
.@ToledoRockets truly have nothing to lose today, both men and women. And that's a great place to be in March. Not having the favorite's tag takes off all the pressure. Two quality foes in Miami women and Akron men. To quote Chris Berman, "That's why they play the game."
Go to 20 teams, with all 10 FBS conferences getting an auto bid. Use straight seeding. Lowest eight seeds play in the first round with a re-seed to follow. That should give the top seeds an easier go in their first game, as well as one home contest.
More evidence that Rust > Rest. In 6 CFP quarterfinals so far, every team with a bye has trailed at halftime with a cumulative deficit after 30 minutes of 101-21.
No bye team has scored more than 8 points in the first half. Ohio State last night and Texas Tech today were shut out in the first half.
Good omen for Alabama and Ole Miss.
.@ToledoFB set to hire @MercerFootball HC Mike Jacobs, a Maumee native.

More details to follow! Let’s pack the stands and cheer on the Comets! 💥🏈
With tonight's @MACSports results, there is now a 5-way tie for second behind @WMU_Football. @BallStateFB can make it a 6-way tie with a win Saturday over @EMUFB.
The other tied teams: @ToledoFB, @CMU_Football, @OhioBobcats, @UBFootball, and @MiamiOHFootball.
We could have #MACtion chaos next week.
-- @OhioBobcats vs. @WMU_Football winner stays in 1st in @MACSports standings.
-- If @ToledoRockets beat @MiamiRedHawks and @CMU_Football tops @UBFootball, then there will be as much as a six-way tie for 2nd with 2 weeks to go.

Today's good read. Fans want toughness out of the @ToledoWalleye late in the playoffs. But toughness isn't just about dropping the gloves. @DBriggsBlade weighs in. toledoblade.com/sports/walle…
