Service charges up 26% in a year.
Our supporters are clinging on by their fingernails while the government retreats on its manifesto promise to end leasehold.
@andyburnham talks about taking back control. So why won’t his upcoming Bill give leaseholders the Right to Manage?

Almost 1 km of Oxford Street is now pedestrianised. Trees, seats and plazas are planned for spring 2027.
More room for public life, lingering and chilling. Not just shopping. The real test: an inclusive street that works for visitors and neighbours alike.

Reform plan to bring back imperial measurements to help boost US trade, not realising that US imperial measurements are different from UK ones.
So dense a black hole is empty space by comparison.

Yesterday (Oct. 26) marked the 150th consecutive day that the Niño 3.4 sea surface temperature set a new record daily high, at 30.22°C (preliminary).
This was more than 1.13°C above the previous record daily high set in 2015, as well as a record 3.49°C above the 1991-2020 baseline.

That story about Google killing hundreds of thousands of trees in Finland for its data center project is such a perfect microcosm of what capitalism is doing to our world.
Recent mass media headlines are saying the tech giant "illegally" cut down "250,000" trees, but both claims paint an inaccurate picture of what actually happened. Google killed 400,000 trees (250,000 near a town called Muhos and another 150,000 near the village of Otanmäki), and unless the company's executives actually wind up going to prison for this, their actions cannot properly be described as "illegal".
I don't know who first coined the saying "If the penalty is a fine, then it's legal for rich people," but it certainly applies here. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has reportedly ordered Google to suspend all “measures that significantly change the environment," saying it will "consider enforcement proceedings and fines" if the megacorporation does not comply. Google's parent company Alphabet has a net worth of around four trillion dollars. Whatever paltry penalties Finland might impose for these ecocidal actions, it won't have any meaningful effect on Google.
Giant corporations do this shit all the time. They calculate that the fines incurred by their abusive actions will be dwarfed by the massive profits they generate, issue fake apologies as needed, and leave it to their armies of lawyers to minimize the damage. That's why the Sackler family is still worth billions despite all the fines Purdue Pharma was slapped with while creating the US opiate epidemic.
A 2017 Harvard study titled “The Opioid Epidemic: Fixing a Broken Pharmaceutical Market" contains the following paragraph:
"Although civil claims and criminal charges were brought against Purdue and its executives, the resulting penalties paled in comparison to extended-release oxycodone profits. In May 2007, the company and its president, chief counsel, and former chief medical officer pled guilty to falsely marketing extended-release oxycodone as 'less addictive, less subject to abuse and diversion, and less likely to cause tolerance and withdrawal than other pain medications.' As part of the plea bargain, Purdue agreed to pay the federal government $600 million and 27 states $20 million. The three executives agreed to $34.5 million in fines but avoided jailtime. By contrast, Purdue has earned an estimated $31 billion in total revenues from extended-release oxycodone since its launch. Rather than deterring fraudulent marketing, the penalties simply became a cost of doing business."
A cost of doing business.
That's how things work under capitalism. The law primarily exists not to protect people or the environment, but to protect the interests of capital. If you destroyed a Google data center you'd probably be charged as a terrorist and spend decades in prison, but Google can destroy the natural world around you and get off with a finger wag and a symbolic fine. If you stole millions of dollars from your employer you'd go to prison for grand larceny, but if your employer steals millions from its employees you need to win a class action lawsuit to get back what they stole from you.
Proponents of capitalism often pretend they support minimal government intervention in civilian affairs, but their entire model is at all times propped up by state power using force to protect the haves from the have-nots at every level of our society. Corporations are free to destroy the environment, destroy your health, rob you, exploit you, and manipulate your government to their advantage, and if you ever take action to stand up to this world-devouring onslaught, the state will lock you in a cage.
In school we are taught that that the law exists to protect ordinary people from bad people, but that's not true at all. Under capitalism, the law exists to protect the very worst among us from everyone else. That's why we are seeing our planet being turned into dust and ashes for no reason other than shareholder profit.
It's an insane system, and it needs to end. These freaks are feeding our entire biosphere into the woodchipper.

A magical morning in our Shetland garden: two beautiful migrant Long-eared Owls were sat in the trees and as we watched them with local birders Carol, Julia and Bernard I picked up a HOOPOE flying through the garden which gave great flight views as it bounded north out of sight. Nice garden tick!

Besides being nakedly racist and bigoted, this is just hilariously wrong on all levels.
I mean, Omar Yaghi won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry last year, and he won the Wolf Prize in 2018. And that's just one example.
He also said Arabs don't produce any literature. Last year's winner of the National Book Award was Lebanese writer and painter Rabih Alameddine. The winner in non-fiction? Egyptian-American journalist Omar El Akkad.

Not a very knowledgeable cabdriver who doesn't know there are entrances to John Lewis on Henrietta Place and Holles St; and entrances to Selfridges on Duke St, Edwards Mews and Orchard St. There are also taxi ranks.

I’m a cabdriver in London and 3 times this morning passengers have asked me to take them to Selfridges and John Lewis. I say I can’t get them there, they say is it a demo, I say no it’s closed permanently. They decide to go Harrods instead. Business killer.

You can always tell when something in Britain has been pedestrianised because the chat swaps from “if those feckless disabled scroungers can walk to the kitchen, they can get a job” to “what of the poor, ailing disabled who need to be driven directly to the shop doorstep?”

They’re not laughing now.
They said leasehold could never become a top-tier political issue.
It was too technical.
Not sexy like planning reform.
Westminster didn’t care.
That’s what they told me when I set up the campaign in 2023.
Yesterday, the prescribed rates for extending a lease or buying the freehold (!!) became a national political talking point on Laura Kuenssberg’s show on BBC One, with @AngelaRayner struggling to bat back the detail.
There we go.
An issue supposedly too technical for Westminster to care about is now being put directly to the Housing Secretary and a former deputy prime minister on the biggest political show in the country.
Those of us in the five million households living under leasehold are not here to be smirked at or palmed off.
Service charges are soaring and more and more leasehold homes are becoming unmortgageable and unsellable because of the greed and corruption of feudal-style freeholders and their managing agents.
The old politics of spin, silence, word salad and cosy relationships between journalists and those in power doesn’t work like it used to.
In this new information age, traditional media gatekeepers are being forced to respond to campaigners like us.
And if they don’t cover the story, we make our own with vertical videos and briefings.
So, Secretary of State, can you give leaseholders a cast-iron guarantee that the costs of extending their lease or buying their freehold will fall under the government’s reforms?
Labour is abandoning its manifesto promise to end the leasehold system.
In opposition, Labour warned that governments could be “lobbied by vested interests” into setting enfranchisement rates “that will be punitive for leaseholders”.
@mtpennycook himself tabled amendments to the legislation that became the 2024 Act, seeking to make premiums “as cheap as possible for leaseholders”.
Yet in a consultation that Ministers had refused to publicise, and which closed on Wednesday, we find the U-turn buried in the detail:
“... it is not intended to use prescribed rates in and of themselves, as a means of further reducing premiums for leaseholders”.
The policy on enfranchisement rates is now merely to:
“... reduce the potential for dispute and provide certainty for leaseholders, freeholders and professionals as to what to expect from this part of the enfranchisement process.”
How convenient for the freeholder lobby.
This is a huge political story, picked up last week by The Times, POLITICO and Guido Fawkes.
No wonder Pennycook has taken to X to dismiss scrutiny of the government’s quiet betrayal of leaseholders as “misinformation”, as though The Times were some Russian bot account.
They said leasehold could never become a major political issue.
We’ve made it one.
And we’re not going away.
Every attempt to water down reform, every delay and every broken promise will face fierce scrutiny and carry an ever-higher political cost until they @FreeLeasehlders.
HUGE political story.
Rayner is rattled.
Labour are betraying their manifesto promise to end leasehold.
@mtpennycook is ditching his own “guiding principle” from opposition: lowest possible premiums for leaseholders, for much cheaper lease extensions and freehold buy-outs.
