In Russian-occupied Kherson region a woman came to the hospital in Hola Prystan bleeding. No anaesthesia. No electricity. The nurse turned on the torch on her phone and held it over the table. There was no other option, the Guardian. 1/

Our field research in #Afghanistan found: 1. Taliban-run madrassas are reshaping gender norms for girls & boys. 2. Its being used to spread Taliban ideology. 3. Is drawing resources away from public schools. 4. Poses long-term security challenges. Read: dropsafghanistan.org/the-tal…
New Research | When we talk about Afghanistan under the Taliban, the conversation often stops at the ban on girls' education. But our new brief by @OfficialMariamS and Ayesha Khan (@ODI_Global) suggests there is a bigger story underneath. Testimonies from students, parents and teachers in Kabul reveal that the Taliban are using madrassas to socialise both young boys and girls into the regime's strict interpretation of Islamic Law. For girls, the ban on formal education beyond Grade 6 is part of a wider effort to embed the submission of women and girls to men in social, economic and political life. For boys, the system steers them toward support for the Taliban's ideological vision, and the brief finds this is fostering mistrust within households and social instability. That is why the authors say this reaches beyond Afghanistan. They warn it poses long-term threats to regional peace and security and call on the UN and international stakeholders to recognise and monitor it as a global security concern. Education is usually seen as a development issue. This brief asks us to see it as a security one too. While everyone debates the Guardian letter, here are some much more important letters, written at great risk by the very political prisoners currently being treated as mere footnotes to ideological arguments. These are the voices that actually deserve our attention. ⬇️

As I told @RuchiKumar in this @ForeignPolicy article about the Pakistan-Taliban war, the Taliban are hyper ideological. For them, no amount of convergence of political interest can overcome ideological misalignment. foreignpolicy.com/2026/04/01…

Zelensky: I will not recognize $500 billion debt to the U.S. The support was $100 billion These were grants, and we agreed with Biden and the U.S. Congress [not Trump] (Zelensky doesn’t name Trump directly, but he is clear that Trump can’t renew on what the U.S. agreed before)
