I have followed up our recent stay in Amsterdam with @RussellShorto’s fascinating history of the city. He explores how the unique geography and history of Amsterdam—particularly its fight to reclaim land from the sea—fostered a democratic, cooperative ethos that became the bedrock of the city’s political and economic freedom. Amsterdam’s liberalism has encompassed social, political, and economic freedom, and also religious toleration unknown in the rest of Europe during religious wars of the 16th and 17th centuries.

📚 No. 28 on the year: @RussellShorto’s “The Island at the Center of the World,” a recommendation from a tour guide in Amsterdam.
There is so much of the city’s Dutch origins that lives on today throughout the country. An absolutely fascinating read.

The #Dutch had known the city as #NewAmsterdam for the past thirty-eight years. No one had instructed #RichardNichols on what to call it, so he decided himself to call it "the Towne of Manhattans." @RussellShorto @WWNorton amzn.to/3Hu371L #ad #StevosNovelIdeas #NewYork

I have to say that @RussellShorto's new book, "Taking Manhattan," is magnificent. I'll never think of NYC (or the Puritans, the Dutch, the Stuarts, or Peter Stuyvesant) the same way again. Shorto is such a great historian and storyteller.

Beneath New York's foundation lies a complex history—one shaped by colonialism and Indigenous dispossession. This dialogue contends that understanding these hidden layers is crucial to grappling with the present.
