Deeply humbled and honored to lead the Trent Center. I’m incredibly excited to work alongside our brilliant team as we continue to ensure the human dimensions of medicine—ethics, history, and the humanities—remain at the heart of our practice at @DukeMedSchool @DukeHealth @DukeU
Ryan Antiel, MD, MSME, has been appointed as the next director of the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities & History of Medicine. @DukeSurgery @Duke_Childrens

A new US study published in @acsJACS provides the first look at surgeon flourishing, shifting the focus from burnout to well-being.
While we highlight high levels of meaning and purpose, it also identifies significant gaps in social connectivity.
@DukeSurgery @DukeMedSchool
In a national survey of US surgeons, mean flourishing was 7.98/10, with the highest scores in financial stability and meaning/purpose, and the lowest in close social relationships.
Most surgeons (88%) viewed surgery as a calling. Fewer work hours, having children, and a sense of calling were associated with higher flourishing.

Congrats to both @DukeSurgery Annie Liu and Clark Howell!
I have been privileged to work especially close with Clark on launching the Good Surgeon during his research years.
Excited to follow his career in surgical oncology as well as surgeon formation!
🎉 Congratulations to Duke Surgery residents Dr. Annie Liu & Dr. Clark Howell on matching into CGSO fellowships at @DukeSurgOnc and @UTMDAnderson! We are so proud of you! #SurgOnc #CGSOMatch @DukeSurgRes @SocSurgOnc
Can we help residents sustain the ideals, awe, and joy that drew them to surgery?
We share "The Good Surgeon" in @AnnalsOpen to:
✨ Reimagine the meaning of our work
🤝 Foster community
🌱 Consider who we are becoming

Last week we welcomed Prof Dr Jan Deprest @DukeSurgery for an inspiring visit and lecture on the history of FETO for CDH. A true pioneer in fetal surgery, he reminded us how innovation, collaboration and persistence moves the field forward! @segurabj @RyanAntiel @DevReg_KULeuven

Spent an incredible day with @DukeMedSchool @KernNetwork exploring the "Bake & Rest" method with @kvslice
Both surgery & baking require embodied knowledge -not just in the head. Understanding the dough is like understanding the body: it takes patience, presence, and practice
