It took over a year of development coming up with what I understood to be at the time a completely novel look for an animated short film in a single 6 minute shot. The Nuke script got so large near the end of production, that I was editing it in a text editor to save time.
10 years ago today, the animated short film The Rose of Turaida was released. It gained 77 festival selections and won a number of awards.

1/4. Just in time right before the end of World VFX Day, I wanted to share one of the most memorable sequences I have worked on in my career, the Quicksilver Pentagon Room sequence in X-Men: Days of Future Past. #WorldVFXDay
4/4. This was a technique I had been thinking about for a while before I started on this project, and my initial tests proved that not only was it easy to set up, but the render times were quite manageable. #WorldVFXDay
3/4. I used ray cast geo blockers to decide which part of each HDRI was to be projected onto certain areas of the room geometry. And that was it, no other lights were used in these shots. #WorldVFXDay
2/4. I set up the lighting of these shots in Houdini by projecting 6 HDRIs shot in different parts of the room onto low poly geo and used the results as one single geometry light. #WorldVFXDay
Something I've been working on recently is a procedural map style system that is heavily guided by the look of Tolkien's maps. I will be releasing a comprehensive 'making of' and icon pack soon. Stay tuned!
