Kratos is the reason God of War became an icon. In 2005, playing as someone that angry, brutal and morally complicated felt different. He wasn’t the usual hero. He gave this series its identity, the way Lara Croft defines Tomb Raider and the Doom Slayer defines DOOM. I’m open to spin offs. But from what I’ve seen, Laufey doesn’t capture what I love about God of War. The world and art direction feel closer to Alice in Wonderland. The combat looks weightless, where’s the impact behind those hits? And what the hell is that cube following you around? I’m talking about the art style, not the graphics. Even the Digital Deluxe armor looks painfully generic. Honestly, AI could have come up with more interesting designs. What is the selling point of God of War: Laufey besides the words God of War on the cover? People told me the same thing before Marvel’s Wolverine: “Just wait, bro. It’s going to be incredible.” I waited, and it turned out to be exactly what I feared: a polished, painfully safe game that never rises above average. That is the broader problem I see with blockbuster game development now. Huge budgets, familiar IPs, and glossy trailers are being used to sell games that feel designed by committees terrified of taking a risk. I can spot the formula from a mile away. And before someone makes this about Laufey being a woman, I would say exactly the same thing if Atreus were the lead and the game looked like this. You can put God of War on the cover.
