Darlington Matola's suspension is part of the reprehensible drive by the state to subdue one of the few progressive movements left in Zimbabwe. The criminalization of student activism must be fought and condemned. Legally, politically and by all means possible.

Midlands State University’s Unjust Suppression of Student Activism: “Universities Must Recognize That Their Role Is to Empower, Not Suppress *By Tsitsi Ngara Maphosa — Change Radio* Midlands State University (MSU) has come under intense criticism for its recent decision to suspend five student leaders affiliated with the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU). The suspensions, which occurred on February 26, 2025, were met with outrage from student activists, human rights defenders, and regional organizations such as the Southern African Students’ Union (SASU). The suspended students, Keegan Mathe, Takunda Mhuka, Nester Moyo, Tanaka J. Sibanda and Fanuel Gona, were targeted for engaging in a ZINASU membership drive and raising awareness about students' rights while wearing ZINASU-branded t-shirts. These suspensions have been widely condemned as unlawful, repressive and an outright violation of academic freedom. Sarah Edwards, spokesperson for SASU, speaking to Change Radio on 4 March 2025 strongly criticized the manner in which MSU handled the matter. She said, _“It is against this background that the Southern African Students’ Union strongly condemns the suspension of ZINASU members at Midlands State University without clear reasons or due process. This blatant disregard for justice and student rights is unacceptable in any democratic society.”_ Universities should be spaces for learning, critical thinking, and activism, not institutions of oppression. However, MSU has blatantly ignored its own disciplinary policies, failing to ensure that students were given a fair hearing. Edwards stressed that _“the arbitrary suspensions without *hearings* violate not only basic principles of natural justice but also regional and international standards on the right to education and freedom of expression.”_ According to MSU’s regulations, disciplinary action should be carried out under specific guidelines: 1.The reason for suspension must be based on a clearly defined misconduct or violation. 2.A transparent and fair investigative process must be conducted. 3.Students must be granted a hearing to defend themselves before disciplinary action is taken. 4.An appeal process must be available to challenge any unjust decision. In this case, none of these fundamental rights were afforded to the suspended students. By disregarding its own regulations, MSU has not only undermined its credibility but has also demonstrated a disturbing commitment to silencing student voices rather than fostering academic freedom. Edwards further decried the suspensions as an attempt to suppress student activism and democratic engagement. _“This is an act of oppression targeted against those at the forefront of advocating for student rights and academic freedoms,”_ she said. _“This suspension lacks transparency and fairness, which are essential pillars of justice in any disciplinary actions.”_ Universities, as centers of knowledge and intellectual discourse, should encourage free thought and activism rather than stifling it. The move by MSU reflects an alarming trend of academic institutions being used as tools of repression, rather than spaces of open dialogue and progress. SASU, along with other student and civil rights organizations, has demanded the immediate reinstatement of all five suspended ZINASU leaders. Edwards made it clear that SASU will not remain silent in the face of such injustice, _“We reject any attempts to weaken student governance, silence critical voices or suppress activism. A society that stifles its young leaders undermines its own future.”_
