Dawn Staley shares the question every recruit should ask and almost none of them do. "Everybody's good on the good days. It is who you can trust, who you can talk to and communicate with on your worst day." Then she explained what she tells every recruit: "We're gonna make you feel good during the recruiting process. You're gonna come here, we're gonna roll out the red carpet, we're gonna give you our best. Everybody's gonna do that." Every program shows you their best - that's the easy part. But it comes down to trust. "I want you to think about if it's 2 or 3 years down the line, when you in a slump, or when you lost a parent, or you broke up with a boyfriend, or whatever - Who's gonna get you back on course to be your talented self?" That's the real question. Not who recruits you the hardest, but who do you trust? And who do you believe will commit to you and your future? Everyone looks good when things are easy. The real test is who shows up when things get hard. (🎥@OldManAndThree)

Joe Mazzulla on the importance of building a culture that doesn’t depend solely on the head coach. “You don't want to be the sole person controlling the environment. You almost want it to run better when you're not around because that's a testament of the people.” If your culture only works when you’re watching, then you've merely just created compliance. The best environments are sustained by the people and shared ownership inside them. 📹: Verse Us Podcast

“Can you accept your role?” “Can you make yourself as selfless as possible?” Two questions that define a great teammate. Two questions that define a successful team. 1. Know your role. 2. Accept your role. 3. Thrive in your role.

Damian Lillard says too many highly regarded young players are surrounded by “yes men” that tell them they are great Once they get to the next level, when their talent isn’t enough to get them through, they struggle with working hard and being stable 🗣️

The goal isn’t to make everything easier. It’s to help people build the capacity to handle harder things well. Don’t rob them of the growth that comes from necessary struggle.

Sean McVay shares a universal truth about adversity and resilience. "You're either in it, you're coming out of it, or you're gonna go back into it in a short period of time." That's the reality. Adversity isn't a one-time event - it's a cycle. "The separator is people's ability to handle that. How long can you stay in some of those uncomfortable spots and knowing that real growth is occurring?" The question isn't whether adversity will come. Because it will. The question is: can you stay in the discomfort long enough to grow from it? "Adversity's inevitable. That's what's so great about sports. We learn so many things that test you in ways that are reflective of what you go through in a bunch of different arenas." You don't grow despite adversity - you grow because of it. The best aren't fearless - they just keep showing up. (🎥@pureathleteinc)

Nick Nurse gives a surprisingly blunt definition of good coaching: 1. Win games 2. Increase every player’s value in the marketplace “People ask me, ‘What’s your coaching philosophy?’ For me, I always try to say a couple things. One is: You’ve got to instill that you’re playing to win the game. That sounds really simple. But that is how we’re judged. That’s why they keep score.” “Right under that is: Can we increase each player’s value in the marketplace? The guys who make the All-Star team are always from winning teams. The guys who win end-of-the-year awards are always from winning teams. MVPs come from winning teams. Those things are closely related.” “I’m not afraid to talk to the players about that. How are we getting you to another place? To a better contract? A longer contract? From the 13th man to the ninth man? From the ninth man to the sixth man?” “What can we do? We spend a lot of time trying to get them better. We’ve got to develop them. We’ve got to work with them. We’re not afraid to tinker with their shot. We’re not afraid to put in the time.” “Our film sessions one-on-one are about winning basketball plays. That’s what makes a good coach.” “Can you substitute well? Can you call timeouts well? Can you draw plays? Can you get on them when they need it? Can you put your arm around them when they need that too?”

There was a record number of players going to mid-majors out of the Top150 in 2026. That trend should continue as high majors prioritize the portal and 5-in-5. Mid-majors have more access to young talent than ever before.

Rick Pitino shares how a Wall Street legend changed the way he recruits. When Pitino asked Mario Gabelli where he found his best talent...University of Chicago? Harvard? Wharton? - Gabelli's answer surprised him: "No. I look for PhDs - Poor, Hungry, and Driven people." Pitino adapted it for his players: Passionate. Hungry. Driven. 1. Passionate - They love the work, not just the results. You can't teach passion - it's either there or it isn't. 2. Hungry - They show up and do the work consistently - they're never satisfied. They outwork, outprepare, and outlast. 3. Driven - They have direction. They don't wait to be pushed - they take ownership of themselves, their actions, and their attitude. Three three traits that compound over time. (🎥 ISSA/INTERCLEAN Conference 2014)
Rick Pitino doesn't just recruit talent - he recruits PHDs. Not the degree. The mindset. Here's what it means and why it's one of my favorite new acronyms. (📌Bookmark this)
