Good morning, John @JohnTizard & thank you, as always. Jack Beddington, who ran Shell's advertising department, would see a painting in an exhibition & then commission the poster. Here's "North Foreland Lighthouse" by Elwin Hawthorne from the collection @SHAC_Curator #ELG
Good morning, Alan. Thank you for sharing Elwin Hawthorne’s “North Foreland Lighthouse”. The East London Group artists’ work that were featured on Shell posters this painting demonstrate the special attraction of the Group’s art. You can understand why Shell commissioned them.

Can you guess what the London Zoo and Shell have in common? It's British wildlife artist and sculptor Barry Driscoll, born #OTD in 1926! Having painted three large murals for the London Zoo, Driscoll later realised several artworks for Shell, including 'Rutland' in 1961.

It's #InternationalMountainDay - enjoy 'Loch and Mountain' by Keith Shackleton, for Shell's 1983 calendar 🗻 Stunned by the view, the artist recalls "It was swept by curtains of sleet, sudden bright clearances followed by snow flurries that hid all and left a mantle of white."

'Flowers of the Countryside' - Shell's most popular publication, was illustrated by British artists Edith and Rowland Hilder and published in 1955. Its surprising success led Shell to later commission many more nature and wildlife studies by different artists. ('January', 1955)
