In my address to both Houses of Somaliland’s Parliament this morning, I expressed our support for President Cirro in New York. We are a reliable partner. We are not asking the world to speak for us. We are asking for our rightful place at the UN, where we can speak for ourselves. Our children deserve the same opportunities as children everywhere. We have our achievements, our strategic location, and much to offer the world. #Somaliland #UNGA

BREAKING: President @Abdirahmanirro writes in @WSJ:  “My Country, Somaliland, Recognized." On December 26, Israel made history by recognizing Somaliland. Today, we make our case to the world.  This recognition is rooted in shared memory. In the 1980s, Somaliland faced mass atrocities – over 200,000 killed, 90% of Hargeisa destroyed. Israel spoke up at the UN while much of the world stayed silent.  For 30+ years, Somaliland has delivered peace and democracy in the Horn of Africa
Our Gulf of Aden coastline and the modernized Berbera Port make us a vital gateway for global trade. Somaliland offers strategic partnership where it matters most. As China and Turkey expand influence in Somalia, Somaliland charts a different path:   ✅ Democratic stability
 ✅ UK-trained Coast Guard, piracy-free waters
✅ Alignment with Western security in the Horn & Red Sea President Irro: “…many countries in Africa and beyond have long sympathized with the moral and legal foundations of Somaliland’s case and have been waiting for a first mover. We, too, have waited – patiently – for decades. Now, Israel has taken this bold step. We are confident that others will follow.” Read the full op-ed: wsj.com/opinion/my-country-s…

I announced today the official recognition of the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. Together with Foreign Minister Sa'ar and the President of the Republic of Somaliland, we signed a joint and mutual declaration. This declaration is in the spirit of the Abraham Accords, signed at the initiative of President Trump. I congratulated the President of Somaliland, Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdallah, and praised his leadership and commitment to promoting stability and peace. I invited the President to pay an official visit to Israel. The President thanked me for this historic declaration and expressed appreciation for my achievements in fighting terrorism and advancing regional peace. I thank Foreign Minister Sa’ar, the Head of Mossad David Barnea and the Mossad, for their contribution to today’s development, and I wish the people of Somaliland success, prosperity, and freedom. The State of Israel plans to immediately expand its relations with the Republic of Somaliland through extensive cooperation in the fields of agriculture, health, technology, and economy.

On 26 December 2025, the State of Israel formally recognized the Republic of Somaliland as a sovereign and independent state, following a high-level virtual meeting between H.E. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During the discussions, the Prime Minister extended a formal invitation to President @Abdirahmanirro to undertake an official visit to the State of Israel to advance and formalize bilateral cooperation. This historic act affirms Somaliland’s enduring statehood, validates its decades-long pursuit of lawful recognition, and marks its irreversible emergence onto the international stage as a legitimate, responsible, and peace-anchoring member of the community of nations.

It's a great privilege to conduct the first official diplomatic visit to Somaliland, at the invitation of President @Abdirahmanirro. The visit is also a message: We are determined to vigorously advance relations between Israel and Somaliland. Today, we held substantive discussions with the President and senior members of his government on the full range of our relations. The mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries are not directed against anyone. Our shared objective is to promote the mutual benefit of both nations and countries. In Hargeisa, I made it clear: Only Israel will decide whom it recognizes and with whom it maintains diplomatic relations. The President of Somaliland informed me that he has accepted @IsraeliPM Netanyahu’s invitation and will pay an official visit to Israel.

Chinese Ambassador meeting and glorifying a warlord who is in direct war with Somaliland is irrefutable evidence of #China’s interference in the internal affairs of #Somaliland and creating instability in the Sool region by supporting an ill-fated armed group. Somaliland is aware of the Chinese activities, and we are calling on them to stop the interference and instigating violence in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland is strong and resilient. We are capable of restoring peace to all over our territory.

Replying to @KagutaMuseveni
Reposted (Do not delete again) A note to Yuweri K. Museveni of Uganda... Respected Mr. President, I would like to clarify an important point. Somaliland's journey isn't about secession from Somalia, but rather a withdrawal from a de facto union that, much like Senegal-Gambia or Egypt-Syria, has not served its purpose. On June 26, 1960, 35 nations recognized Somaliland as a sovereign state, a fact deeply rooted in our history. Our envoy could've enlightened you on this We take pride in our democratic values, conducting free and fair elections that have seen four presidents elected since 2003. Our self-reliance is evident, as we've developed our armed forces with our own resources, with no need for peacekeepers. I grasp your strategic interests in our neighbor, but misrepresenting the Republic of Somaliland and prescribing actions based on misconceptions isn't the way forward. Respectfully, Hamse Khaire Republic of Somaliland

Thank you @GavinWilliamson for holding a debate about Somaliland’s quest for recognition. For us, it was not just a debate. It was a sign that we have real friends in the House of Commons. We are people who do not forget those who support us. I am very confident that Somaliland will get recognition. The relationship between the United Kingdom and Somaliland is historical and people to people. The people of Somaliland voted for the restoration of independence in 2001 in a national referendum held across Somaliland. The decision to remain independent is made voluntarily by the people of Somaliland and is final with no going back no matter what.
