ALT A beetle in the centre with solid lines moving towards the beetle and dashed lines moving away indicating water gain or loss. The beetle gains water by cuticular water absorption, dietary water, water vapour to the mouth, water vapour through the abdomen, and through metabolic water generation by oxidizing fuel or through the breakdown of glycogen. The beetle loses water through excretion, respiratory water loss and cuticular water loss.
