When people talk about important crops in Nigeria, maize and rice usually get all the attention But there is one grain quietly feeding millions of people, surviving harsh weather, and thriving where many crops would fail. Meet guinea corn (Sorghum) - A crop so tough that when drought hits, it can slow down, wait, and bounce back when the rains return. Interesting facts about Guinea corn (Sorghum) :- โ€ข Sorghum is one of the most drought-resistant grains in the world โ€ข During severe dry conditions, sorghum can enter a survival mode, slowing its growth until water becomes available again โ€ข Nigeria is one of the worldโ€™s leading producers of sorghum, with millions of tons harvested every year across the northern regions โ€ข Sorghum is the major grain behind kunu, one of Northern Nigeriaโ€™s most popular traditional drinks โ€ข Unlike many grains that lose nutrients during processing, sorghum can be eaten as a whole grain, helping retain its natural fiber and minerals โ€ข Some varieties produce deep red grains that are rich in natural plant compounds called antioxidants โ€ข Sorghum is completely gluten-free, making it an important alternative for people who cannot consume wheat โ€ข The crop is so versatile that while the grain feeds humans, the leftover leaves and stalks can be used as livestock feed โ€ข In many rural communities, sorghum stalks are also used to make fences, roofing materials, baskets, and mats โ€ข Sweet sorghum varieties store sugar inside their stalks, much like sugarcane โ€ข Because it grows well in poor soils, sorghum often succeeds where crops like maize may struggle โ€ข The grain has been cultivated in Africa for thousands of years and is believed to have originated on the continent โ€ข Sorghum is used in a variety of traditional foods, including pap, flour-based meals, and energy-rich swallows โ€ข Many breweries use sorghum as a locally sourced alternative to barley in beverage production Sorghum has more nutrients compared to maize but since maize was introduced to us by the Portuguese, we dropped this amazing crop and focus on maize that has caused us more problems than solutions. Happy Sunday to you Lanre NaijaFarmer

Everyday, we try to get rid of mosquitoes by getting insecticides. How well do you even know this insect called mosquitoes? The mosquito looks insignificant, makes almost no noise, and weighs less than a grain of riceโ€”yet it has shaped human history more than wars, wild animals, or natural disasters. โ€ข Mosquitoes are responsible for more human deaths than any other animal in recorded history due to the diseases they transmit. โ€ข Only female mosquitoes bite; they need blood to produce eggs, while males feed only on plant nectar. โ€ข A mosquito can detect a human from over 30 meters away by sensing carbon dioxide from breathing. โ€ข They are strongly attracted to body heat, sweat, and certain body odors, which is why some people get bitten more than others. โ€ข Mosquitoes inject a numbing and anti-clotting chemical when they bite, which is why the itch comes later. โ€ข A single female mosquito can lay 100โ€“300 eggs at once. โ€ข Mosquitoes can breed in extremely small amounts of water, even a bottle cap or blocked gutter. โ€ข They have existed on Earth for over 100 million years, surviving dinosaurs and mass extinctions. โ€ข Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk, when temperatures are cooler. โ€ข Some mosquito species prefer human blood specifically, making them more dangerous than others. โ€ข Mosquito larvae live in water and breathe through tubes, coming to the surface for air. โ€ข Mosquitoes are weak flyers but can travel long distances with the wind. โ€ข K!ll!ng adult mosquitoes helps, but eliminating stagnant water is the most effective way to reduce their population. โ€ข Despite their danger, mosquitoes are part of the food chain, feeding fish, frogs, birds, and insects. โ€ข Without mosquitoes, some ecosystems would change but human health would dramatically improve. Now, you've learnt some interesting and useful information about mosquitoes. Retweet so others can learn also.

This is heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜ญ ๐Ÿ˜ญ ๐Ÿ˜ญ A massive fire has destroyed over 200 hectares of rice farmland operated by AgbuCity Farms along the river bank in Gwer West LG of Benue State, causing losses estimated at about โ‚ฆ5 billion. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. The fire broke out around mid-morning and spread rapidly across the expansive farmland, aided by strong winds and the dry condition of the rice crop.ย  This is a serious economic loss for Benue state and Nigeria. Very sad situation

#NaijaFarmerTips Ever noticed how after being bitten by something ant, mosquito, or even a small insect, you start scratching without thinking? Kids especially, and even adults, can scratch so hard or rub their skin against rough surfaces that it breaks the skin and causes discomfort. Hereโ€™s a simple tip you can use to help with the scratch. If thereโ€™s no first aid around, onion juice can come to the rescue. How it helps: Onion juice has natural disinfecting properties. When applied to minor open wounds or scratched areas, it helps prevent infection and supports faster healing. What to do: 1) Cut an onion. 2) Extract a little juice. 3) Apply gently to the affected area. Don't allow scratching to spoil your fine skin ooo.

The value chain when it comes to oil palm cannot be overemphasized, it's a whole lot. This is one crop that has very interesting and advantageous use for us. 1) The oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis) is highly efficient, producing up to 10 times more oil per acre than other major oilseed crops like rapeseed or soybean. 2) Two distinct oils are harvested from the fruit: palm oil from the fleshy outer pericarp and palm kernel oil from the seed (kernel) inside. 3) Palm oil is found in approximately 50% of packaged goods in supermarkets, including lipstick, soap, pizza dough, ice cream, and chocolate. 4) The fruit grows in dense clusters called fresh fruit bunches (FFB), which can weigh 9โ€“23 kg each. 5) Oil palm trees have a long productive lifespan, yielding usable fruit for 25โ€“30 years from a single planting. 6) The palm oil industry provides essential income and employment for millions of smallholder farmers across tropical regions. 7) Palm oil is naturally semi-solid at room temperature, making it a versatile substitute for hydrogenated oils (trans fats). 8) Crude palm oil is rich in beta-carotene (Vitamin A) and Vitamin E, giving it its distinctive reddish color. 9) Originating in West Africa, the oil palm was introduced to Southeast Asia in the late 19th century and thrives in equatorial climates with high rainfall and humidity. 10) Mature oil palm trees can reach up to 60 feet (18 meters) in height, requiring specialized tools for harvesting. 11) Unsustainable palm oil production contributes to deforestation and habitat loss for endangered species like orangutans and Sumatran tigers. 12) The industry is increasingly adopting certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) practices to reduce environmental impact. 13) A single oil palm tree can produce around 18โ€“27 kg of oil annually. 14) Palm oil is widely used as a feedstock for biodiesel and other renewable fuels globally. 15) In traditional African medicine, various parts of the oil palm, including the sap (palm wine), leaves, and roots, have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Hope you learnt something interesting today. It's a good day to start thinking of planting some Oil palm trees ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜Ž

Everyone asks for an โ€œeasy cropโ€ to grow and sell. But is anything really easy in farming? One big mistake: harvesting before securing a market. Thatโ€™s not farming, itโ€™s gambling. Plan the market first, then plant. Farming is a business

Many of us heard so many different things about Donkeys while growing up. Some where true, while some where not. Let me walk you through the facts that are actually true. 1) Donkeys are incredibly intelligent animals with exceptional memories; they can remember places and other donkeys they met up to 25 years later. 2) A donkeyโ€™s bray can carry up to 96km in the desert, allowing them to communicate over vast, open distances. 3) They dislike rain and cannot stay in it for long periods because their fur is not waterproof, which can damage their health. 4) Donkeys possess large ears that not only provide excellent hearing but also help them to cool their blood and regulate body temperature in hot climates. 5) Their โ€œstubbornโ€ reputation is a misunderstanding; they have a strong sense of self-preservation and will refuse to move if they perceive a situation as dangerous, as they think things through before acting. 6) Donkeys are naturally stronger than a horse of the same size and are capable of carrying up to 30% of their own body weight on their backs. 7) They have an incredibly efficient digestive system, capable of extracting up to 95% of the nutrients from coarse and fibrous plant material like straw. 8) Donkeys are often used as guard animals for livestock like sheep and goats because they have an innate wariness of canines and will actively attack perceived threats. 9) They were first domesticated in Africa some 5,000 to 7,000 years ago and are still a vital lifeline, serving as primary working and pack animals for millions of families globally. 10) A healthy, well-cared-for donkey can live a surprisingly long time, often well into its 40s or 50s. 11) They form strong, lifelong social bonds with one โ€œbest friendโ€ within a herd and can become depressed and ill if separated from them. 12) Many donkeys have a distinctive dark stripe running down their spine and a perpendicular stripe across their shoulders, forming a cross shape, a common physical trait. 13) A male donkey is called a jack, a female is a jenny, and a baby is a foal. 14) Donkey milk is making a comeback in the beauty and healthcare sectors due to its similarity to human breast milk and high content of anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. 15) Donkeys are extremely agile and sure-footed, able to traverse difficult, rocky, and mountainous terrain where horses might struggle. Bonus Facts๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘Œ A donkey's bray (a loud Hee-haw sound they make) can travel over 96km in the desert, allowing them to communicate over vast open, open distancs, be like make you shout for Lagos berger and somebody dey hear you for Toll gate Ibadan (God Abeg!) And before you ask, Donkey get sense pass some people.
