Hundreds of Chinese workers flown in to build a state-backed battery plant in Finland faced coercion, deportation threats, and massive wage clawbacks.
Finnish police arrested nine people, including the managing director of a Chinese subcontractor, on suspicion of human trafficking and aggravated facilitation of illegal entry at the €800 million cathode active material site in Kotka.
The project, majority-owned by Beijing Easpring and co-backed by the Finnish state, used fast-track permits to bring in hundreds of Chinese-only-speaking workers. Yle reporting and an independent legal review found pressure to sign contracts that broke Finnish law, agreements forcing workers to refund wages above a fixed amount to overseas entities, and unagreed deductions for housing and food that sometimes topped €1,600 a month.
