Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

Significant. Lawyers for Reform UK donor Ben Delo say that referring to his criminal conviction is a breach of privacy law, with no "public interest". If highlighting the criminal records of those bankrolling UK political parties is not in the public interest, what is?
Wow. I’ve just received a threatening letter from Ben Delo’s solicitors Addleshaw Goddard. They are claiming, among other things, that it is unlawful to publish information about Delo’s conviction for an anti-money laundering offence in the US. They also say I cannot publish their letter. An extract is below. Is Delo going to get his solicitors to threaten everyone who mentions his conviction? How is this not a SLAPP? @sra_solicitors @DanNeidle

Replying to @kevinbonavia
@kevinbonavia I have a young girl in need in Stevenage that has a young baby that has been made homeless and @NorthHertsDC have washed their hands of them. Social services have her a place at Hitchin mother and baby unit but she can’t go there immediately. I paid to put her in a hotel last night so that her and her baby were not walking the streets. The baby is on child protection plan and is under social services. Stevenage social services are and have been beyond negligent along with North Hertfordshire council. She’s a vulnerable young girl with a young child and has been quite literally left on the streets. I have gone above and beyond for them since she was released from prison in December but I’m at a loss. Can you please help. She is all out of options. Please also share this, I need to get this girl the help she needs.

@ZARA_Care your staff in Bluewater are absolutely disgusting. Diana and Alana inferred someone had stolen a blouse they were wearing as it was this seasons and demanded to see the receipt. I will be taking this further and minded to issue legal proceedings.

This is Diana, you rude and obnoxious member of staff, I would suggest she is sacked with immediate effect before you read about her in the Sunday papers.

Job done!!
Imagine the delight and laughter in Moscow and Beijing over the US Congress being obliged to pass a bill to prevent the president of the United States from invading another NATO country.

.@realDonaldTrump Cognitive tests like the MoCA are not measures of intelligence and have nothing to do with IQ. They are screening tools designed to detect potential cognitive impairments, such as those related to dementia, by evaluating basic functions like memory, attention, and language. Intelligence tests, by contrast, aim to quantify broader mental abilities like reasoning and problem-solving. Trump has sometimes conflated the two, but they serve entirely different purposes.

A personal plea to @elonmusk My two sons have not been allowed to see or speak to their father Imran Khan who has been held unlawfully (acc to the UN) for 22 months of solitary confinement. X is the only place left where we can still tell the world he is a political prisoner without basic human rights. Yet every time I post about him, the reach inside Pakistan (and often globally) is throttled to almost zero. You promised free speech, not “speech but no one hears it”. Please fix the visibility filtering on my account so we can get the message out! @MarioNawfal
