🕯️ story of young tom riddle 🕯️
You open your eyes in a damp Muggle orphanage and the first thing you understand is that no one is coming for you. The other children are small and loud; the staff is tired and wary. You learn early that you can make things move, make people hurt, make the world obey if you concentrate. When a boy calls you a freak you set his bed on fire with your mind and watch the panic with something like scientific interest. The power is real. The people around you are not.
At Hogwarts the masks fit better. You are brilliant, beautiful, and polite. Teachers call you exceptional. You collect secrets the way other boys collect Chocolate Frogs—every flaw, every fear, every pure-blood name that looks down on you for your Muggle surname. You smile and they confide in you. You never quite return the favor. In the Slytherin common room you practice the voice you will one day use on thousands: measured, certain, never raised. Underneath it the old orphanage coldness remains. Affection is a weakness you catalog but do not practice. You are already building a private list of people who will one day need to disappear so that Tom Riddle can become something cleaner.
You discover the Chamber. You speak Parseltongue and the basilisk answers. For a few months you are a god with a single, perfect weapon and an entire school of potential witnesses. When the Ministry arrives you frame the half-giant and walk away untouched. The lesson is useful: institutions protect the person who looks most like them.
The Horcruxes are not dramatic in the moment. They are arithmetic. You kill because the soul is a material that can be divided, and death is the only true humiliation left. Your father’s grave is quiet. Your uncle’s house is quiet. Each murder is a small, clinical subtraction of yourself. After the seventh you feel lighter and more brittle at once—capable of surviving almost anything, incapable of wanting almost anything. Friends become instruments. Love becomes a word other people use when they want to be controlled. You stop looking in mirrors that show your old face; the new one is more honest.
Power arrives in stages. First the Death Eaters learn to kneel without being told. Then the Ministry learns that fear is cheaper than truth. Then the name “Voldemort” spreads because you decided the old one was a Muggle contamination. You are rarely angry. Anger is inefficient. You are rarely happy. Happiness is a distraction from the next problem: the prophecy, the boy who keeps surviving, the pieces of you that refuse to stay dead even when you wish they would.
Most nights there is no dramatic monologue. There is only the quiet calculation of what must be done next and the faint, persistent awareness that you have already paid for immortality by never quite being alive. The orphanage boy who set the bed on fire is still in there somewhere, watching the larger fire he has made and noting, with the same detached interest, that it has not warmed him.
